Gorilla Mum Mayani With Her Baby Girl Thandie
This longer video is of these two gorillas from the Antwerp zoo. Mayani and her baby daughter Thandie.
The baby has such a cute face and those eyes are just something else. :-) She goes and explores her enclosure with mum never far away. Just look at the difference in size from mum's hand and hers. It makes me smile everytime I see the bit where Thandie looks at mum's nipple, her eyes just say it all. I want some of that. :-) Mayani is happy to oblige. At the end of the day, she takes the branch with leaves in her mouth, climbs with one hand and has Thandie dangling on her other arm to the top bunk. Matadi sitting in the back munching on his own leaves.

Close Up Of This Awesome Hippo Playing With A Log
Open wide! Look at those teeth! :-) This Hippopotamus is having a great time playing with that log. Grabbing it, pushing it around and sinking it. Such a powerful animal and really enjoying his pool.
The Hippo is from the Antwerp zoo in Belgium. The weather is hot and the hippopotamus is having fun.
Gorilla Lope Moments
A compilation of new and old clips from the Gorilla youngster Lope.
Lope is playing with a bottle, puts it on his head and jabs it like a boxer a few times on his shoulder. In the next clip he walks off in his funny way. Walking with a bunch of wood wool, then walking upright with his sticks he collected. One of his trademark is to kick his leg out, well in this clip he just holds on to the tube with his leg instead. Looking for food in the purple ball, but only finding water. Inside he plays with a log the Lope way. The outside clips shows Lope getting some wood wool and plonks himself in the shade under the platform. When he doesn't sit on the wood wool , he just carries it around in his mouth. Watch out for the close up of him, it's just so funny when he slides down that slope and than, not sure Lope the Cheerleader lol?

Gorilla Shufai Moments
Shufai sliding, rolling down the slope. Standing on Ozalas head and then falling backwards. Ozala just propping up her head to look what just happened. The next clip Shufai rolling down the slope again. Wonder where he got that idea from. :-) Then he's walking backwards down the slope.
Master at Abseiling in the next clip. Lope his brother watching how he tries to get some wood wool to the platform, but it all falls to the ground. Shufai is looking at the fallen down wood wool as if to say "how did that just happened" he gives up, puts it on his head instead under the platform with Lope still watching.
Outside Shufai starts some kind of cartwheels and just enjoying being silly. Lope joins him with a roll on his own. In the next clip, Shufai is holding on to mums back and propping himself up. Fun with the wood wool again, when he was still quite small and falling into the grass.

Orangutan Uses "Vending Machine"
This Orangutan from the Pairi Daiza in Belgium loves the "vending machine", in its enclosure. He comes down from the slope, wanting a snack. He picks up a stick and he gets to work. It looks like he's after the peanuts. What he has to do is start at the top, move from one opening to another with his stick and then move the peanut one floor down after another until it reaches the bottom and it will fall out. There are some plastic balls in there to make it a bit more difficult. What an awesome idea. Orangutans always stun me how they manage to use tools. I want one for every zoo I visit, no not an Orangutan, lol, a machine like that for the orangutans. lol! But seriously it's such a brilliant Idea.
This was my first time at the Pairi Daiza Park in Belgium and I'm in awe, the animals look so happy and healthy, a perfectly well kept zoo. It's superb for the animals. No horrible fencing anywhere! As natural as it is possible. Huge enclosures and you just need to look at the animals to know that they are happy. They thought about the visitors as well, there are so many angles you can see the animals from. The park is really well kept, it's the vast amount of grounds they've got and it's all very clean, tidy and well looked after. Every little thing they have thought about. I couldn't fault them on anything. Certainly a lot of zoos could benefit from looking at this one. So make sure to visit if you're nearby! There is lots more to come over the next few weeks from this park and also kicking off the new temporary Wednesday series ( you might of had a clue from my banner :-) : The Brown Bears!

Silverback Gorilla Won't Go Anywhere Without His Blanket
You've seen this is the Western lowland gorilla N’Dowe (pronounced Endovay) from the Paignton Zoo in England earlier today trying to get to the leaves on the other side of the enclosure. When he isn't eating, he loves to move around his freshly cut habitat with his blanket and won't let go. He's the Silverback of the bachelor group at this zoo.
!! Have your notification turned so you won't miss next Thursday's video! Surprise coming!!!!
I'm keeping the Thursday gorilla videos with another group of gorillas! I won't say too much, so I don't spoil the surprise. Only that I'm really excited about featuring this gorilla family and being able to show you. Hopefully I'll see you next Thursday! :-)

Silverback Gorilla Gets A Real Taste For Leaves On The "Greener" Side
First of two video today ( next video scheduled 15 minutes afterwards). This is the Western lowland gorilla N’Dowe (pronounced Endovay) from the Paignton Zoo in England. He's the Silverback of the bachelor group. He's sitting there with his lunch, some tree branches he got from the keepers, but he discarded those and keeps looking up. Something much more interesting grows on the other side. He gets up and has a little jump to get hold of the tree branch from the other habitat. He really stretches to get to those leaves. When he's got a bunch, he sits back down again and just look at that face! His eyes say it all. It's something special. While eating he already looks up again, contemplating if he get get some more and that's what he does, gets himself another portion.

Lope And The Big Tree Branch
Gorilla Lope got hold of a big tree branch and he's not sharing it with anybody. He's dragging it to the shade where he sits down and pulls off a big chunk of bark. When Asante comes close, he quickly moves just to be sure that she won't steal it. Not that I've seen Asante steal anything, it's more the other way round. :-) He didn't like the spot where he moved to , so he went back to the first place. Only for Ozala to come out and suddenly charging at Lope to get to the food. Asante decides it's best to just get out of the way and sprints in the other direction. Ozala manages to get hold of the branch, but by the time I reposition myself Lope got back his branch and enjoying some more of the bark. The funniest bit is, when Asante comes close again, Lope moves , walking upright with the branch in his arms which looks like he's just about to do some real damage, but luckily he moves past Asante without any incident and sits back down again in the shade.
Gorillas Brothers Chasing Each Other Past Gorilla Asante
Gorilla brothers are chasing each other again pass Asante who sits in the doorway. Asante tries a few times to slow them down, but the brothers don't take any notice. Only when their dad Oumbi comes over they stop. Asante, as always, moves away when the Silverback comes close. In true Lope fashion he just comes out, makes himself comfortable on the pole, just as if he wants to say " What dad? Where doing nothing" All calm here. "

Bonobos Clash Over Ice During The Heatwave
The bonobos got some ice as the weather is heating and they are loving it. Especially the young one as he can't get enough. The ice has some juice and almond shavings in it. They love it that much so that later a clash breaks out. The male of the group isn't very happy that all the females get first choice. Unlike chimpanzees, it's the females that dominate in a bonobo group. The male starts to swing the hose vigorously and even starts to kick the another bonobo.
Many people think they are Chimpanzees, but although they are very similar and both are closely related to humans, the bonobo is a lot slender in appearance. With the Chimpanzees the males are the dominant, but the bonobo the females. Unfortunately like a lot of other animals they are threatened by habitat loss and human population growth. Twycross zoo is helping the bonobos getting back to the wild by supporting the Conservation Welfare fund with the daily running of the sanctuary Lola ya Bonobo. The sanctuary released 13 more bonobos to the wild from what I heard last.

There Is More Than One Way Of Approaching The Door For Gorilla Lope
Lope the Western Lowland Gorilla from the Twycross Zoo shows you there is more than one way of approaching the door to the inside in his own funny way.
I love this new way he's got, where he claps his hands before he rolls. This is just typical Lope always manages to make us smile. And yes, he still walks upright! :-)
This is a compilation of new and older unseen clips.

Gorilla Baby Shufai Pestering His Brother Lope
Shufai the Western Lowland Gorilla from the Twycross Zoo is getting his own back by pestering his brother Lope. Chasing after him and wanting to play. Lope has this new habit that just before he rolls he claps his hands. You'll will see this in my future videos. He does it quite quickly. Shufai continues the chase, a brief pause and then Lope chases after Shufai. Shufai does a quick belly flop, but he needs to get a bit better at it if he wants to match his brothers. Grandma Biddy is having a quick look over what the kids are up to. Oumbi the silverback is not interested.

Who's Quicker Lope The Gorilla Or His Baby Brother
It's lunch time and the gorillas come out to eat. I thought how nice that Lope the Western Lowland Gorilla lets his baby brother Shufai just eat in peace without charging at him. I should of known it wouldn't stay like that. :-) . When Shufai decided to go onto the hut, Lope started chasing after Shufai. Shufai was just too quick and nimble for Lope. So funny when Lope tries to jump up to get to his brother.

Orangutan Is Having A Duvet Day
Don't we just love a lie in and just put our heads under the duvet. Mali the Borneo Orangutan from Paignton Zoo doesn't feel any different. If just that noise from the neighbour habit of the gorillas weren't there. They are getting their grass cut. She starts to move to different place towards her daughter, taking all her blankets with her.

Lope The Gorilla And The Paper Roll
Lope the Western Lowland Gorilla from the Twycross Zoo in England is playing with the Paper Rolls, when all over sudden he decides to run after Shufai . When he finished and I get the chance of seeing part of him, he is lying on the floor playing with the roll again. As I can see only half of him with his legs crossed I zoom in on his feet playing with the branch. When he gets up, he looks a bit bored or just contemplating his next move, when all of a sudden he throws the roll away and runs outside . There he found another roll, that he tries to squeeze between his legs and tries to walks with it. He then sits down, bites and plays with the tube.

The endangered bonobo also formerly known as the pygmy chimpanzee, are sometimes called gracile or a dwarf chimpanzee. They are our closest living relatives, sharing around 98% of our DNA.Many people think they are Chimpanzees, but although they are very similar and both are closely related to humans, the bonobo is a lot slender in appearance. With the Chimpanzees the males are the dominant, but the bonobo the females. Unfortunately like a lot of other animals they are threatened by habitat loss and human population growth. Gorilla Brother Shufai Disturbs Lope On The Upper Platform
Gorilla Shufai decided to annoy Lope a little. I guess Shufai got some catching up to do - getting his own back on his big brother. Grabbing and trying to pull him of that platform.
It was a beautiful day today, but unfortunately the gorilla family decided they rather want to spent some time inside than outside in the sun. They've got some new netting inside, which Shufai loved falling into, but unfortunately I couldn't film as it is too far up.

Longer Video Of Gorilla Brothers Lope And Shufai
After the short clips a longer video today with our favourite Gorilla sibling from the Twycross Zoo - Lope and Shufai.
They’re really full of beans.
Apart from the two chasing each other and playing. Shufai takes after Lope and thought it might be fun to bite grandma Biddy in the butt, then Lope is running up to her as well and has a quick wrestle. Asante is watching with her back to the camera. Than the two brothers continue to play. Lope still sucking his thumb and look where he got it from , Asante is doing the same.

Introducing Baby Gorilla From The Artis Zoo In Amsterdam
This is the cute baby gorilla from the Artis Zoo and his name is Damsi. He was born on the 18th of October 2018. His mum Dafina picks the little one up and swings it over the wall. More from Damsi next Thursday!
Short Clip Of Gorilla Lope and A Fly
Just a short clip today, but hopefully still enjoyable. :-) Gorilla Lope from the Twycross Zoo encounters a fly on his hand. He's looking at it and tries to eat it, but he's just too slow. It's been quite difficult lately to get longer videos as they've been inside and hiding alot, but I'll promise when I get the chance to make them longer then I will!
Gorilla Lope And Shufai On The Food Pole
Lope knows what to do when he sees the new feeding tube. He pushes the sites appart to get to the honey and food bits inside. He is just not very careful with it and jumps when one of the cover slips down. Not deterred he gets some more. Shufai obviously hasn't seen the pole before. He fails to get anything and when he sits down you really feel sorry for him when he lowers his head, but then he has a little swing instead and all seemed fine. Later he tries again and this time he manages to pull the plastic apart.

Gorilla Brothers Lope And Shufai
Shufai is beating his chest at Lope. He seems to want to play. Lope tries to get away at first, but then both have a embracing each other. A sweet moment between those two. When Lope gets away again, his brother follows and tackles him again.

Gorilla Mum Ozala Has No Mercy When Food Is About
Gorilla mum Ozala loves her food and when someone else has some that she wants, she steals it. No mercy. When Lope, her eldest at Twycross Zoo is having a snack from the food Log, mum watches closely and then charges Lope and chases after him. When Shufai her youngest son could get more salad than her, she just steps over him to get quicker to the other platform to get to the food. Lope knows Ozala is coming and jump away keeping his distance, but Ozala still charges at him, shufai running after the two. When Ozala and Shufai sit on a ground to feed on some grass, Ozala pushes her baby son out of the way. When Shufai manages to gets a Carrot, Ozala steals it off him. At Halloween last year Ozala wrestled the bag away of Shufai, but that was too much for the little guy, he didn't give up easily and tried with all his power to get it back. When Shufai has a nice Tomato she just steals it out of her hand.
Ozala is not usually like this and she is a great mum, just not so much when there is food about, she lets everybody know that she has first choice. She probably needs to keep up her strength as well to cope with two rascals like Lope and Shufai :-)
This is a compilation of new and old clips.

Meerkats Spectators Fascinated By Gorillas Squabble
It's like the meerkats are watching a wwe match, they look that excited and intrigued. Another mixed enclosure for the Gorillas. This one is from the Artis Zoo in the Netherlands. The gorillas and Meerkats live together, they've also got some Diana Monkeys, but I only spotted them in the corner of my eye high above.
The gorillas decided they have a chase and a squabble and the meerkats are watching it all with interest. Even though they nearly get run over by the western lowland gorillas, they're coming back to watch some more and edging forward slowly. They don't seem to want to miss anything. When the gorillas decide they have a chase, the meerkats start to jump up and down what looks like to get a better good look where gorillas are. The nimbble meerkats quickly jump out of the way when the primates come back round and continue to watch them.
I know some worry about the meerkats being together with the gorillas that they might get hurt. The meerkats seem to know what they letting themselves in for. Meaning they aren't hiding away in their own dens or spaces, which they have. They actively spent time close to the gorillas. They're so nimble that they can can quickly move out of the way.

Honey On The Big Ball Is Finger Licking Good For Gorilla Asante
Earlier this week you so Gorilla Lope not being sure about the ball in the enclosure. That gave Asante the chance to have her share of honey and she truly loved it. She's licking it off the ball and uses her fingers to get the rest. I love it when she wipes the honey off gently with her finger and then licks it off her fingers. Such a gentle soul.
Thank you for your poll on my community page! Who guessed correctly that it was Asante? 😁
NEWS:
From next week Thursday (9th May 2019) I will publish an extra gorilla video a week from different zoos from the Netherlands until I run out. Chases, Charges And Belly Flops From The Gorillas
Gorilla brothers Lope and Shufai have a chase around their hut with Silverback dad Oumbi and grandma Biddy watching. Oumbi then has a little charge down the hill, but watch Lope and Shufai in the background! Lope does his famous belly flop down hill, nearly pulling grandma with him and Shufai looked like he was warning grandma to watch out Lope is coming. Afterwards the siblings continue their chase with another one of Lopes belly flop down the slope.

Jambo the hairless chimp from the Twycross Zoo in England is balancing on the rope. He doesn't look the most comfortable ape up there and is wobbling quite a bit. It was definitely easier getting up then down. The last bits he decides to just slide the rest of the way, trying to balance carefully.

Gorilla Lope Creeps Out About Big Ball From The Keepers
The keepers of the Twycross Zoo worked hard to get a huge ball into the gorillas outdoor enclosure. They lifted it over the glass wall, lowered the ball and then dragged it up the slope. Then they put honey on the ball and did all the other usual daily activities to hide food around the enclosure. Oumbi is watching from the window as a keeper pushes some food bits into the balls hole. When he comes outside instead of heading for the ball, he heads for some salad instead. When Lope comes out, he already has some salad, he squeezes to the wall as much as he can, so not to go near the ball. He licks the honey of the windowsill, then has a quick look at the ball, but avoids it. Later when he comes back, he looks at the ball again, like it's alien and then just jabs it. The western lowland gorilla gets a bit closer to look into the hole, but again just pokes it. When he does it a third time, it makes him jump out of the way and he just looks at it like wtf is this thing. Even though he should of got used to it by now as they had it in the inside a while back, but he did avoid it then as well. For the rest of the day he just avoided it all together and was just happy with the salad.

Penguin Works Hard To Provide Nesting Material
It's hard work being a Penguin and providing nesting material for its partner. First he's trying to break some sticks of a bush. He pulls and pulls, but doesn't seem to have a lot of success. You wish you could just lent him a hand and break some of for him. He is more successful when he is pulling vigorously on the grass.

Gorilla Cleans And Peels His Carrots Before Eating
Just like us humans, this gorilla prefers his carrots peeled! Watch him closely as he first wipes off all the dirt from the hay and then peels each carrot with his teeth and spits it out. I slowed down the action so you can see that the bits he peels off fly through the air and drop to the ground. He also chopps off the ends before he starts eating it. This is another video from a different zoo. This one is from the Ouwehand Zoo in the Netherlands.

Gorillas Astonishing Dodge Of An Electric Fence To See Visitors
Gorillas astonishing dodge of an electric fence to see visitors.
My visit to a different country wouldn't be complete without visiting the zoo to see the gorillas. That's why this week I'll have a Gorilla from the Burger's Zoo in the Netherlands.
It is a pretty big group and I'm not sure on their names. I'll try and find some more info when the time allows.
This gorilla youngster is just amazing. He managed to get through the other side of the electric fence that separates the window and their enclosure just to say hello to the visitors. He moves further down between the fence and the window and starts to contemplate how to get back to the other side of the electric fence to the rest of the group. First he smells the fence careful so he won't touch it with his nose. Now watch him closely, it's just amazing and funny at the same time. He tries to judge the electric fence gap by rocking on his feet and judging with his hands. Rooting for him to make it through to the other site without him getting zapped. Another gorilla comes over to have a look. Wonder what he's thinking. Not feeling to comfortable with getting through the wire gaps , he moves on to another part of the fence and tries again by sticking his arm through the wire gap - judging again. And then relief, happiness , he's done it! He did it like a pro without touching the wire. What a star!

Close Up Gibbon With Its Amazing 100 Decibel Voice
This gibbon is really showing off his vocals. On top of his pole with the view of the whole zoo you can hear the call that can be heard from in the far distance. Agile gibbons calls can reach up to 100 decibels and are audible over distances of almost two miles! These gibbons are mostly quiet during the day but often sing at sunrise and sunset with loud whooping sounds.

Gorilla Afia Seems Unhappy With Choice Of Clothing
This week ( mon + Fri ) I have got two short clips from the Bristol Gorillas from last year. ( Back With Twycross Gorillas next week!)
Afia is wrestling with the T-shirt, well what's left of it. She gets herself all in a muddle and starts to slam the shirt repeatedly. When it starts to rain, she got hold of a jumper, but she isn't happy with that one either.

Gorilla Asante Beats Her chest At Ozala And Lope
In the last video you saw Asante just quietly getting her share of the snow , but when Ozala, Asantes half sister, creeps up on the site of the climbing frame, Asante starts beating her chest at her and Lope and then moves away from the two. As she is the lowest ranking female in the group it's always hard for her to just enjoy something without anybody else interfering. That's why most of the time she spends her time on her own or near biddy. She just eats and sleeps in the top bed inside. Lope watches what his mum is doing, probably making sure she's not stealing too much snow/ice.
Ozala moves over to the other platform and Lope beats his chest over a little plastic cup he found. I'm just laughing now, trying to write the next bit. I'm not a the habit of filming Lope when he's having a pee, but I just couldn't cut that out. It was so funny. Him standing there casually with the cup in his mouth and then he just started peeing like he has no care in world. Mind you at least it's all clear not yellow 😁😁! Getting obviously plenty of fluids, but that's no surprise with how much ice he's eating. Just standing there still looking at his mum and finishing his business. Ozala then moving closer ( yes, I know what you're thinking, don't eat that snow where Lope stood lol) . As she gets closer to her son, Lope start beating his chest at her and then he tries to get that big snowball off her, without success. In the end you can see Asante did manage to get he share of the ice, scraping it off the frame and running off when she's finished.
This is the last video winter video of the Gorilla family , as the weather is getting warmer.
As some of you may know, I'm a photographer as well. My favourite subjects are animals and nature, but also photograph other things like buildings. The only thing I don't photograph is humans :-)

Gorilla Lope Snacks On A Sheet Of Ice
Gorilla Lope has got himself a sheet of Ice this time. He smells it first, holds it close to his nose and then he takes a big bite. When he turns round, aunt Asante has joined him. He is watching her for a few seconds, Lope is quick to take cover, but Asante is just turning around. Lope decides to walk over to the other platform and starts crunching on another bit of ice.

Polar Bear Cub Nanook
NEW VIDEO: An animal I never featured before, the Polar Bear. Travelling to Germany I had to see Lara the Polar Bear from the Zoom Erlebniswelt zoo in Gelsenkirchen and her playful male cub Nanook. Lara was born in December 2004 in vienna and got moved in 2005 to this zoo. Nanook was born on December the 4th 2017. Here the male cub is getting his energy with mums milk so he's all ready for play time afterwards. He found some plastic ( I assume which contained food at one point) under the tree trunk. Not sure of what to do with it first, he walks away but later plays with it a little and decides it's better in the water than on land and throws the bit of plastic into the pool. I thought he might jump after it, but he decided against it.

It's Oumbis The Silverback Gorillas Turn To Enjoy Some Ice
zala is finished with scraping up all the ice, with Shufai on her back and a handful of the ice she’s about to cross on the rope, but Oumbi the Silverback, her mate has the same idea. She contemplates for a second of what to do, but decides it would be better to get out of his way.
Once she’s gone, Lope is approaching Oumbi and he’s not happy that dad is on his platform. He beats his chest at him with Oumbi just ignoring him. Lope manages to get a few bits of ice and then continues to watch his dad eating some too. Lope is beating his chest again and hits the platform. Oumbi moves and Lope is quick to retreat, giving his dad a few minutes peace to enjoy the cold snack. It’s not long before Lope is back with some more chest beats.

Gorilla Lope Has To Share Some Ice With His Mum And Baby Brother
Lope is still loving his ice and he’s not in the mood for sharing. He’s looking for some more ice scraping it off wood panels and ropes. Ozala his mum and Shufai are climbing to the top to get some ice as well. When they climb the rope to get to Lope, Shufai seems to slip on the ice of the rope, but he manages to hold on and makes it to the other end.
Lope isn’t happy with the two for coming over , so he runs up to Shufai grabs his arm and tries to pull him off the platform. Shufai manages to hold on and moves closer to mum. The two of them are enjoying their cold snack. When Lope is coming back up again staring at mum and his brother. Mum lets Lope know not to come any closer and chases him off. When Shufai eats the ice, you can just see how big his hand has gotten.
Lope is not giving up and comes back to watch the two. Ozala is watching her Lope coming closer and Shufai uses the distraction to steal some ice off her. Lope beating his chest, but mum is having none of it and chases Lope away again.

Baby Tapir Slips And Then Chases Off Magpies
The cute baby Tapir from the Chester Zoo in England comes outside with it's mum. He still got all his stripes, which he will lose when he's about 6 month old.
He goes to investigate the mud puddle instead of using their nice clean pool. When he gets out of the mud puddle, all the mud is running down his legs, making the ground very slippery for him and he slips back in the puddle. He doesn't seem to mind and comes back for some more mud treatment. When he had enough he suddenly jumps out of the puddle runs like crazy along the grass and then he has fun chasing off all the magpies in his enclosure. Who would have known a Tapir can run that fast?
Such a cutie. When his parents decide to go back in again he runs after them with such speed that he can't seem to stop himself and bumps into dad making him almost slip.

Jambo Chews The Wood Wool Like Bubblegum
Jambo seems to enjoy what looks like a bit of wood wool that he is chewing like bubblegum. It is probably the same reason as the Gorillas scratch of the bark from tree branches to get the sodium (salt) from it. Sodium is significant for the healthy working of the living organisms and is part in muscle contractions, blood pressure and preserving water and acid-base balance.

Gorilla Lope Eating Ice From A Stick
The cold, but sunny weather brought some icy frost to some spots of the Gorillas home. Biddy is enjoying the winter sunshine with Lope being outside as well. The frost took over where the sun isn’t shining. Especially things like the stick that’s lying on the grass and the climbing frames are all covered in icy frost and we know the gorilla like their ice. In the summer it’s popsicles and in the winter snow and ice. Unfortunately not a lot of snow yet, but Lope is happy enough with the ice on the stick. Licking it from top to bottom. When he’s finished he goes up to the top of the climbing frame and gets some more and beating his chest a few of times, like he’s the king of the ice. When done he dismounts from the top and follows gran inside with his wobbly Lope walk that we love so much.

Lope Enjoying Some Winter Ice
Lope the 6 year old western lowland gorilla Lope loves to eat snow, unfortunately there isn't any yet, so he makes do with the frost on some of the climbing frame outside. He scrapes together the ice from the surface. He keeps running in and coming back out to get some more. Obviously just too cold to stay outside as the temperature dropped so quickly. He normally has to get in there before dad Oumbi steals it all, but today Oumbi stays inside in the warm.

The Twycross Gorilla Brothers
Lope sitting there sucking on his thumb, which I see him do on a regular basis now. Shufai wanting to play and keeps grabbing Lope until Oumbi is photo bombing my view with his backside :-) .
When I get a view again, Shufai untangles himself from dad's legs and then the brothers continue their play around the big Silverback. Dad keeps interrupting his sons play and you wish he would get properly involved and have a good play with the two.

Winter Sunshine For The Gorillas
The Twycross Gorilla family are enjoying the warm winter day. While Ozala is sitting in the wood wool with Shufai and grandma Biddy by the hut, Lope is grabbing some of the wood wool and moving it to a shady place under the climbing frame. His sweet face looking in the direction of the camera, with his warm breath being visible against of the cold air. When he had enough he just walks off, the Lope way.

Chimpanzee Enjoys Getting Her Nose Picked
This is Coco, the mum of Jambo. She also has alopecia like her son Jambo, but hasn't quite lost all of her hair. She has been with Twycross Zoo since 1969. She was born in 1965.
She seems to enjoy getting her nose picked by what looks like her daughter. She has a real good go at mums nose and yes she does eat the bogey (booger) afterwards. "Lovely!" lol

Elephant Baby Trying To Push Big Brother Into Water
These are the Elephant brothers from the Köln Zoo. I'm not sure what it is, but everytime I see baby male Elephants they seem to have the knack of annoying there much larger siblings. This one is trying it's best to push the bigger one into the water. Keep running up to him and pushing again.
Unfortunately I can't tell you their names as it is quite a big herd and this is the first time I've seen them.

Orangutan Dad Is a Bit Rough With His Baby Son
The male borneo orangutan Batu is following his son Basuki through the outdoor enclosure. He keeps trying to grab his son, but he is getting away and climbs the net. He is not out of reach, so Batu pulls his son down. It all looks a bit rough and scary, especially when he opens his mouth close to the baby's head. He then carries Basuki away, until Basuki wiggles free again and is trying once more to get away. Dad follows and grabs him again by his little arms. I don't think Batu wanted to hurt the baby, he was just very determined to get his son inside and Basuki really didn't want to go. He did manage in the end, but it wasn't long before Basuki seem to escape again and came outside heading for the climbing net. When Batu came out again, little Basuki quickly headed for his mum.

Gorilla Lope's 6th Birthday Party
After the disappointment of Twycross not doing a public Birthday Party for Oumbi last year, I was happy that Twycross did do a Birthday Party for Lope yesterday. Unfortunately it looked like they were low on staff this time of year. Everything seemed to be very rushed and not a lot of thought has gone into the decoration. The family got lots of tree branches, scattered grains inside and outside, food pellets, cardboard tubes and gift wrapper that seemed to be covered with something as they licked this off later. I didn’t see any toys like they had last year like the rubber Kongs.
If you’ve seen last year’s video, you know Lope didn’t care too much for his Birthday party and was hiding! It wasn’t much different this year! He just came out grabbed one of the cardboard tubes and went outside straight away! Outside he was just looking for the scattered grain. Meanwhile inside at least the others enjoyed the different things in their enclosure. Especially Shufai ( just like last year) had a little dance when he saw all that wrapping paper. Biddy looked for the scattered grain, Asante had another tube. Ozala hid behind the inside tree. Back outside Lope stopped looking for grains and had a good go at one of the tubes. When he went back inside he continued to investigate the tube. Shufai found the flipped over Happy Birthday sign and flips it over again. Almost as to say look Brother is your Birthday, enjoy it a bit more! Lope just flicked at back around again to look for some more scattered food. More clips to come on Monday!

Baby Rhino And The Mud Puddle
The greater one-horned rhino calf Akeno not only loves to run around all day, he also loves his mud bath. As soon as he finds a mud puddle, that it. It has to be used. He rolls around in it, covering himself from both sites. With the puddle not being quite big enough to cover all of him, leaving a funny a dry stripe down the middle.
Also known as the greater one-horned rhinoceros and great Indian rhinoceros the baby was born at the Chester Zoo, Cheshire England at around 6pm on 3rd of May 2018. It is a male and they named him Akeno, meaning “beautiful sunrise”. Asha his 11 year old mum, had a 16 month pregnancy and only a 20-minute labour. The dad Beni is separated from these two, presumably for safety reasons.
Akeno is a big boost to the threatened species breeding programme. Did you know : a calf can drink 20-30 litres of milk per day and grows by 1-2 kg daily! They are excellent swimmers and can even dive!
