via IFTTT This is one of the things that I'm sure Lope will miss in France. The Snow. I'm not sure if so far south they will get any snow and if they do, would they let him out in the winter. Although the snow got less and less each year as well, we always had a few days of snow for them to enjoy their snack. Lope is never scared of confronting anybody not even his dad who's in his snow snack spot, but he quickly "does a runner" when Oumbi turns around and beats his chest at him. Wishing everyone a great happy fun-filled and most importantly healthy Christmas. ❄️🎄❄️🎄

Gorilla Brothers Lope and Shufai's Epic Chase and Jumping Feats 1 of 2

via IFTTT *Gorilla Lope was walking down the slope at first. Shufai, his younger brother, was sitting by the door. This door proves to be his escape route. More on that later. Lope then turns around, and while walking backwards and facing his brother, he beats his chest. Shufai ignores him for a few seconds but then gets up. They both run off. When they are back around the hut, standing opposite each other and waiting, Shufai gets the chase started again by clapping his hands. They run out of sight. Shufai is quite out of breath, breathing heavily. He gets back up when Lope comes close again. They wait again until Lope throws the branch in the air, beats his chest, and starts chasing his brother again around the hill. Back at the hut, Shufai is on top of the roof and beats his chest. Watch Shufai when he beats his chest; he always does his little jump when he does it. Below, Lope moves around the hut and sits down. That's when Lope sneaks around and comes up on the other side to surprise his brother. Shufai quickly escapes, and Lope takes the short route by jumping onto the platform. I'm always amazed by this jump. It's not a short jump, and catching himself on the other side like that must take enormous strength. Lope manages to catch up by having a little run and jump, but then the tables turn, and Shufai is chasing after Lope and doing the run and jump at him. At the bottom, a little break for both. A few minutes later, they are up the top again. Shufai is on the hut, and he's getting ready to have that jump from the hut to the frame. You might remember there used to be a rope in between. Shufai manages the jump as well, not quite as powerful as Lope, but he's getting there. Lope saw him jump and started chasing after him again, finished off with Lope doing his side slide down the slope. He comes back up the slope and starts the chase again. Shufai finishes by going inside. This is what he does now quite often, as he knows Lope won't follow him inside. Lope does go inside, but only if he's really sure Oumbi is out of sight, and then he's mostly up the top where he knows he's less likely to be confronted by his dad. Shufai knows this, and every time things get a bit too close for comfort, he quickly goes back inside. The chases continue, even with a double jump, Shufai first and then Lope. The chase continues in next Monday's video. Orangutan Sprout and Flanged male Djimat have taken cover in the corner and are enjoying a wrestling match. Sprout keeps headbutting the father of her son. She even bites his flanges, the big cheek flaps. Her Mum Jazz, who is looking after her son and Sprout's son, is huddling behind the flap, waiting for the door to open back up. Shufai's Wobbly Swagger and Stick Toss

Today one of their favourites. Some aubergine. The footage was taken throughout the day. Up on the hut, Shufai throws his stick in the air. Afterwards, he continues his bipedal runs. Gorilla Lope Shenanigans Playing Up

via IFTTT Gorilla Lope was in a playful, mischiefest mood, but Dad on the other side of the hut just wanted some peace and quiet. Prague Silverback Does The Deed Finished With A "Love Bite"

Prague Zoo was hoping that Silverback Kisumu and Duni would get together to expand the family. Well their plan worked as Gorilla Duni got her way twice and finished off with a love bite from the huge Silverback. Update: Gorilla Duni is pregnant and it's due Dec/Jan 2023/24. 

You could feel the tension between the Gorilla Duni and the silverback.  

In the hours I've watched the Dja Reserve pavilion gorilla group, Duni was following the silverback around. No bum-slapping this time lol ( Like the Antwerp gorillas), but you could see she was really interested in him and couldn't keep her eye off him. Silverback Kisumu didn't seem that interested at first but he came around in the end, twice! After the second time he finished with a love bite, which Duni wasn't expecting and quickly put her face in her hands. He stopped the biting quickly as a female came charging towards him. I didn't see which female came to the rescue. 

Kisumu was born on the May 27th 1997 at the Münchener Tierpark Hellabrunn, Germany. Before he came to Prague on the 10th of September 2022 he was in a bachelor group from the 04.March.2004 until 10.September 2022 at the  Zoo Schmiding, Austria.

Duni was born on April 16th 2013 in Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno, Spain and got to Prague Zoo on the 16.September 2022. 

Both haven't had any offspring YET.

Gorilla Biddy Gets Steamrolled By The Silverback On Her 50th Birthday

via IFTTT Grandma Gorilla Biddy's 50th birthday was on the 19th of December 2023. Biddy is getting steamrolled by the silverback. The weather is quite miserable outside as well, so not the best start to Biddy's birthday and sadly it didn't get any better. Biddy climbs over the log and Oumbi is either in the mood because the backdoors are closed or he just feels a bit frisky and he's not getting any. I suspect it might be the latter. They had their breakfast so he can't be too hungry. He's granting ( inaudible to the camera). Biddy seems the only one interested in him as she moves closer to him. He calms down and sits for a minute, but then he gets up and starts charging towards Biddy who was eating some of the leftover breakfast cabbage. Her quick reaction made her roll out of the way. It looks like Oumbi gave her a little kick, but playing the video frame by frame it doesn't look like he kicked her on purpose. I think he just lifted his leg to get over Biddy quickly and it touched her slightly. Oumbi went into the corner, and Biddy got up and just gave him that side look lol. Ozala, Asante and Shufai in the background. Biddy started to climb to the top, struggling a bit there. With the weather being so wet I'm sure her arthritis is playing up. Oumbi watched her climb up. Biddy sits on the pole where Asante normally sits. A little later she climbs up to the nesting area, rearranging the wood wool and having a little rest. A couple of close-ups of the gorgeous lady. With this one being a grand milestone birthday, I wished that Biddy would have been treated like a queen on her special day. It wasn't to be for whatever reason. I wish she could have understood me when I told her, that thousands of people haven't forgotten and wished you a Happy Birthday. There were a few leeks outside at lunchtime. Oumbi got himself some and Biddy managed to get some pieces.

The Final Chapter of Budapest Gorillas Finished With A Playful Punch

via IFTTT Gorilla Indigo is hitting Iringa with the wood wool in the back. Silverback Golo is watching. Iringa is always up for a play and a run just like last year ..running after and playing with Indigó. When Indigó did the twirl with the strap, minutes later Iringa had to do the same. Indigó moves down from the Hammock, running towards the next-door room and hits her dad Golo on the back. Outside Silverback Golo is sitting outside. He's now 43 years old (2023) and he does start to look a bit frail. Iringa moves past him, having a quick glance over. Liesel is grooming herself and plucking some grass. When Indigó comes over and sniffs her she tries to look away and then moves on to sit down a bit further away. The only interaction I saw between Indigó and her birth mother was when Indigó was up the top where they were watching the Orangutans outside and I'm not sure what happened then. Her mum came close while she was watching the Orangutans and I think Indigo was doing a quick escape and her mum tried to grab her. As N'yaounda was doing a quick descent Indigó quickly got out of her way. To finish off the video and the Budapest Series, Iringa looks like she playfully punches Indigó, but looking at it frame by frame Indigó actually managed to move away before she got hit. This was the last video of the troop. Thank you for watching another series. Unfortunately, I haven't been travelling to see any other gorilla troops to keep the Thursday tradition (gorilla troop videos from my travels) running. So my thoughts are that I will publish some Lope and family videos. As you might know, I rescheduled a lot of videos from Lope when he was still with his family to bring you up-to-date news about Lope in his bachelor pad. There was always something else happening and I kept rescheduling them. So I will show those on Thursdays from next week, until I'm able to visit another troop again. Lope, Shufai's older brother did this quite often with his dad. Watch out, when Shufai comes back around and she's leaning against the wall. The eye roll says it all. Ozala is always so expressive. Orangutan Sprout's Rainy Shenanigans with Djimat - Jazz Investigates

via IFTTT Orangutan Sprout had a little adventure in the rain! She got all soaked but decided to turn it into a fun game. After giving herself a good scratch, she rearranged the wood wool and playfully threw herself back into it, rubbing her back vigorously to dry it off. Dijimat got curious, and here comes Jazz with Jim and Joe in her arms, rushing over to see what was happening. You can really see the size difference between Jazz and the big guy, Djimat. Chimp Coco Trying To Communicate With Tommy Through Glass

via IFTTT An older video of Chimpanzee Peter (31) and a little girl saying he's daddy. Peter is still in a separate group with only Tommy. I haven't seen or heard anything about Jambo's mother Coco (58) or Holly (40) his half-sister for several weeks now. No info anywhere🤔😥. Peter is eating his walnut when a little girl says "daddy". Mum is quick to correct her 😂 When Peter does his rounds outside, the other group, Jambo's group, is locked inside which includes his mother Coco. Coco spotted Peter from a side window and was hooting at him. Holly at the end of the video, this is the last time I saw her in October 2023. Watch the insect pass her. Sweet Holly.

Happy 50th Birthday Gorilla Biddy

Born in the wild, Biddy's actual birthday remains a mystery, but December 19th has become the chosen day to honour her grand existence. Throughout the years, Biddy has been a symbol of strength and grace. Twycross Zoo has been her home, providing a haven where she could thrive and share her life with her family. Shufai's Energetic Mischief - Pulling Mum off Log and Dad Gets a Slap

via IFTTT Gorilla Shufai has a lot of energy annoying his mum and dad. He runs up to Ozala and pulls her off the log she was sitting on. Then Oumbi Comes charging from the corner. Ozala quickly gets out of the silverback's way. A little later Oumbi sits under one of the platforms and his son comes running, jumps onto the platform, and reaches down to hit his dad. He cringes in surprise, it takes him a second to realise what has happened. He quickly turns around, stands up and tries to grab his son, but he's just too quick. Shufai sits a few meters away looking at his dad. Shufai has his hands full of wood wool when he climbs up to the platform again. Oumbi decides he just wants some peace and moves away. A quick stop so we can admire the silverback. Some brown dried leaves on the ground and on the other side leftover cabbage. Hopefully, Lope will get some nicer veg being in the south of France. Orangutan Jazz Is Always Happy to show off the Babies

When her daughter Sprout gave birth she walked away and left the baby on the floor. Mother Jazz picked the baby up straight away. Jazz is nursing both and giving both love, care and attention. Gorilla N'yaounda's N'yaounda's Sliding Fun And A Quick Jab For The Silverback

via IFTTT Gorilla N'yaounda from the Budapest Zoo loves to slide her feet across the slippery floor taking the wood wool with her. Silverback Golo is on the right-hand side eating a snack. N'yaounda puts her wood wool on her head and a bit later when she goes back into the other room she decides to give Golo who sits in the doorway a little jab on his back. In the background are Liesel and Iringa. When she's outside she tries to get into the right position, relaxing in the grass. It's raining and Orangutan Sprout is under cover in the corner with her son Joe. Sprout has got Joe in her arms and gently bites him. Joe bites her arm in revenge. Leaping Hairless Chimp Jambo

via IFTTT Hairless chimp Jambo from the Twycross zoo swings and jumps onto one of the nests. Followed by a huge leap up to the metal pole. He slides down quickly and runs into the back room. He's still in the mood when I catch up with him again. Hitting the rope in chimpanzee Tuli's direction. He carries on balancing free-handed on the rope. Moves back and forward on the log. It's the pre-dinner atmosphere that always gets a bit heated with anticipation. At lunch, the feeding is done from the top so they have to climb the seven-metre to reach it, giving the chimp some exercise. After his quick snack, he climbed back down again and collected some more food at the bottom. You'll see him a bit closer up when he comes to the window. Jambo getting spoon-fed at the end there. Bonobo Bliss Lola and Upendi's Social Bonding and Playful Day at Twycross Zoo

via IFTTT Bonobo Apes Lola and Upendi from the Twycross Zoo have some fun playing. Female Lola the older one has made her bed with some wood wool. Baby Upendi jumps at Lola to play with her. Lola wiggles with Upendy on her belly. Info: When bonobos engage in rubbing against each other, it is often considered a form of social bonding and communication. Bonobos are highly social primates, and physical contact plays a crucial role in their interactions. Rubbing against each other can serve various purposes, including establishing and reinforcing social bonds, reducing tension or conflicts within the group, and expressing affection or reassurance. Additionally, such behaviour can contribute to the overall cohesion of the bonobo community. Bonobos are very playful great apes. The youngsters always seem to have fun. Lola keeps trying to make her bed and Upendi keeps interrupting her. She pushes him away but that doesn't stop him coming for more. Lola holds him up on top of her and then pushes him off. Upendi keeps coming for more. They have a little wrestle and Lola sits on the little Upendi for a couple of seconds and then rolls away. A few more rolls from Lola. Then another wrestle and Lola pulling Upendi's leg. They having a lot of fun, but Upendi's mum has seen enough. She is known to keep a tight rein on her son. She tries to grab him, but Upendi isn't finished with playing. Eventually, she gets hold of him and gets the wiggle on with him, which I believe is often referred to as "social grooming" or "allogrooming." #bonobos #bonoboape #greatapes

Jazz with Babies, Sprout's Clever Tactics, and Djimat's Rainy Displeasure

via IFTTT *Jazz, with her two babies, playfully retrieves pellets and enjoys a scattering feed. Clever Sprout showcases ingenuity with leaves, and Djimat's autumn leaf feast is interrupted by rain* Jazz is hanging over the wall and dipping her hand into the water to retrieve some pellets that went amiss during the scatter feed. Both the babies are hanging onto her. She shakes her arm, and you can see Joe under her arm. A few minutes later, she extracts more food pellets from the water. This time, she leaves the boys to play. She uses her fingers like scissors to pick up the pellets. When there are no more pellets, she fishes out the autumn leaves, this time with both babies clinging to her again. She picks up some more as she walks off, and the babies get a nibble as well. As always, clever Sprout knows how to get what she wants; she uses a big leaf to reach the ones she prefers and disregards the big one. Not sure what made her choose those particular ones. Djimat is having a big mouthful of autumn leaves, but he's not too impressed when it starts raining a bit. He looks up in the air and tries to wipe his head.

Jambo's Fast and Agile Moves Through Chimpanzee Eden

Jomar, seated to the right of Holly, accidentally drops a piece of cauliflower but skillfully catches it—Nice reaction, Jomar! Jambo, not particularly interested in the food, is behind the duo. Jomar takes a moment to sniff Holly's cauliflower before turning his attention to Jambo. The Alpha chimp resumes his journey, scaling the netting across the opposite side. The effort has made him a bit peckish, prompting him to grab some leftovers before briefly retreating indoors. Jambo swiftly returns, now with a morsel of cauliflower in his mouth. After a brief pause in the hammock, he resumes climbing, making his way to the hut where Chimp Flynn is seated. Jambo descends once more to rest in the hammock. Up To Date Footage From Silverback Oumbi and gorillas Ozala, Shufai, Biddy and Asante

via IFTTT New footage of the Twycross Gorillas Family. Oumbi is in a bit of a strop waiting for his lunch. Charging towards Ozala, Biddy and Shufai by the window. Biddy quickly ducks, and Shufai looks around. Ozala just calmly moves away. Another charge at Ozala. At lunch, he finally got his lettuce another charge telling everybody to stay away from his food. He's happy when he can finally eat. Later in the afternoon, Grandma biddy is getting a good look at Oumbi. She moves when the silverback takes his leg down from the window sill. Oumbi looks through the window. They having something repaired inside and the silverback wants to get back in there. Shortly thereafter Ozala and Shufai have a look as well but move away when the silverback approaches. Oumbi puts his leg up on the window sill and what he can do his son Shufai does too. Lope used to do this as well from an early age when he couldn't reach the ledge with his leg just like Shufai after him. Visiting Twycross never be the same, going past Lope's bachelor pad, empty now breaks my heart, but at least we know now where he is ( Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon in France) and the meeting with the silverback Dishi and the other blackback Aybo went OK. I know we haven't seen Asante for quite a while, so there are a couple of shots of her enjoying her food on the platform from later on that day and then inside a close-up. There are a couple of new Facebook stories out now from the Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon including Lope. It's only a few seconds long...... The area in which the three Gorillas are in looks quite big. Bigger than Twycross Zoo for sure! Lots of windows and lots of natural light. There are some fake rocks for them to climb. Lots of ropes up the top. Lope is standing upright on a log holding on to a fire hose with his back to the camera. The French Zoo wrote "In the past few weeks, 2 gorillas have arrived to form a group with male silverback Dishi. Indeed, Aybo arrived from Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands and Lope arrived from Twycross Zoo in the UK. The contact of the 3 gorillas was done gradually and calmly. All 3 of them are now together on a daily basis and interacting positively!" I hope he's as happy as he was in this short :-) We will miss him so much, but I'm so happy to finally get this news. The Playful World of Bonobo Apes

via IFTTT Upendi, the bonobo baby, is quite feisty, as you can see straight away when he jumps up to the youngster and hits him. Don't mess with little Upendi, lol. When the video starts, I think it is Lola's Mum, Likemba, on the left. Upendi, the baby, is in front of the naughty youngster. Lola is just on the right of the two. And by the door, I think that is Cheeka, Upendi's mum. Lola and Upendi are quite the team and gang up on the naughty youngster who gets another right hook from baby Upendi. The youngster is not welcome, and Likemba chases after him. She returns Upendi and Lola. Likemba seems to be babysitting Upendi while Mum is squeezing her spot. The youngster gets close again, and Upendi is getting ready to battle again, but Likemba holds him back. I think the bonobo that rolls to the back trying to grab Upendi is Cheeka, his mum. She chases after him. In one door, out the other. Lola, meanwhile, has a go at the youngster again. Cheka catches up with Upendi and gets him back inside. Lola is hitting the youngster as he tries to grab her.

Orangutan Baby Jim's Playful Jumps From The Window

via IFTTT Cuteness overload as Orangutan baby Jim comes super close to the window and then jumps off the windowsill into the wood wool. His face, his teeth how can you not love him? He gets more playful by the minute. Not too much I can write about this video, if you like me you probably have a permanent grin on your face. You see Jim's inherited double nipple and later on in the video he has something black in his mouth. I'm not sure what this is, I've seen them chew this a lot. I know in the beginning of the video he has a piece of twig in his mouth, but the black thing doesn't look like a tig. His mum Jazz is there at the end looking at what Jim is doing and then investigating me, well my camera lol. Gorilla Indigo's Food Fumbles On A Pole At Budapest Zoo

via IFTTT *Indigó cleverly stakes out the top of a pole during feeding time at Budapest Gorilla Outside, showcasing amusing attempts to catch her favourite food, while the rest of the gorilla family enjoys their meals in preferred spots.* It's feeding time at the Budapest Gorilla Outside. The food is thrown in from above from two keepers. Indigó's favourite place to get her food is on top of the pole, closer to the keepers while the others all seem to have their favourite place. The first thing that is getting thrown Indigó tries to catch it but fails. She stands up on the pole and beats her chest. The second one, nope went past her as well, but you have to give it to her she sticks with her plan and stays on the pole. Silverback Golo and Indigó's mum N'yaounda are tucking into their lettuces. Sweet Indigó is still holding her hands out to get some food and finally, she gets her lettuce. N'yaounda 'has another lettuce, pulling a bit off and crunching it together before eating. Just look at her face, truly enjoying her lettuce. Indigó quickly puts out her arms for some more, so funny with her straightening up her back. The leek goes past her, but then she catches some lettuce. Iringo comes down from the strap and gets herself some food that has fallen onto the grass. Some more hit-and-miss moments for Indigó before she dismounts from the pole to get some food from the ground. Next week more from the family. N'yaounda signs when she wants more. Jambo's Bug Fighting Tactics at Twycross Zoo

via IFTTT Jambo, the bald chimpanzee from the Twycross Zoo, thoroughly enjoys his time lounging in the hammock outdoors. However, there's a hiccup – bothersome insects that he shoos away. When the insect buzz becomes overwhelming, he ascends to the top, seeking refuge from the pesky critters. Filmed in Sep 2023 An update from my recent visit at Twycross Zoo. Everyone including myself thought Jambo lost quite a bit of weight as seen in the last week's video. He did look OK this time around and was eating normally from what I saw. His sniffles seem to have gone as well. On a worrying note, I couldn't spot his mother, Coco, during two feeding sessions, and it has been a couple of weeks since I last saw his half-sister, Chimp Holly. He has had alopecia, a form of hair loss since his youth. He was born on June 9, 1982. In November 2018, Jambo lost his ear, possibly due to an accidental fight with his mother. Attempts to reattach it with skin glue failed as he continued to pick on it. In October 2022, he also lost a toe, with the cause unknown but possibly related to fights and agitation during mating season. In 2018, the chimpanzees received a new habitat called "Chimpanzee Eden." Last Footage From Gorilla Lope's Bachelor Pad At Twycross Zoo 2/2

via IFTTT This is the final footage of Gorilla Lope at his bachelor pad at Twycross Zoo before his relocation. Gorilla Lope is standing, gazing to spot the tortoises. I wonder if he misses them at his new residence. Probably not he would have far more important and more exciting things to deal with. He is scouring the floor for seeds amidst the wood shavings; it's not an easy task. He assembles all the shavings, clasps them in his hand, and proceeds to blow off the wood shavings, leaving him with the seeds. A close-up captures his fingers picking up some seeds. Later, he munches on the leaves, which he strips off the branch. This was the final full video I made of Lope in his bachelor pad. He has now moved to a new troop. Unfortunately, I still don't know anymore, as soon as I do I will update everyone on his progress in his new home. He leaves a great big hole on my visits to Twycross Zoo and I miss him dearly. Hero Gorilla Lope Defending His Mother When Silverback Attacks Her

via IFTTT As much as he was a rascal to his Mother Ozala, when it came to it and Oumbi charged and pounced on her he defended her together with his little brother Shufai. You see how little Shufai was back then, but that still didn't hold him back, they both made the silverback stop. Oumbi was in a bad mood all day and especially when he's hungry, he gets a bit like it. Lope screams at his dad and then runs after him. Mischievous Orangutan Youngster From Budapest Zoo

via IFTTT The young Sumatran orangutan has a great character. So playful. She walks upright to the window. Wipes her food across it and then she just lets herself fall backwards. A little later she is eating up the top and bits of food and her spit is falling on the Orangutan below. The orangutan on the ground, just looks at her face looking up at the youngster "What are you playing at? I'm getting covered in all your drool and food bits" She tries to wipe it all off. The youngster plays on the hammock and instead of climbing down she just lets herself fall off, catching herself with her one food. Dankgling there and wiping the floor. She drops to the ground. It doesn't take long for some more shenanigans. She tries to get hold of the other orangutan's feet. When she can't pull them out, she starts biting them. That doesn't work either so she stands up straight to try to pull the legs more. Again she lets herself fall backwards and finally, the other Orangutan shows her feet. The youngster starts to pull and bite her feet. Unfortunately, as you have to stay a meter away from the window, I was unable to cut out the glare a dirt on the window.
