Jambo The Hairless Chimpanzee Has Lost Most Of His Ear

Jambo The Hairless Chimpanzee Has Lost Most Of His Ear

It is quite shocking to see this, but I said I would keep you updated on Jambo and Kibali the two chimpanzees. Jambo has lost most of his ear, which I assume he lost when fighting to keep his alpha male position.
Jambo the hairless chimp is from the Twycross Zoo. He has a bit of a rough time at the moment as the younger male Kibali is trying to get Jambos alpha male position. In my last video I showed Jambo sitting on the rope away from the other chimps. I didn't notice his ear then, but it must of been already this damaged as it looks like it healed already. It is quite sad to see, as we grown so fond of the lovable Jambo.
The staff from Twycross Zoo did say that Jambo won't give up his position easily. I just hope he'll be alright.

This was Twycross Zoos statement on their site from earlier this year: "Some of the younger females in the group are changing their allegiance to one of our young virile males, Kibali. This attention is giving Kibali more confidence and a keen interest in mating. Jambo is not in favour of this and as a leader of the group tries to control the situation, which sometimes lead to clashes between the two males.
Challenges for power, although completely natural, are not for the faint hearted. It involves the challenging chimp working to ensure he has his back up in place (lots of bond forming with his chimpanzee pals) and then displaying aggressive behaviour to the dominant male. The extent of this can vary from lots of loud screaming and chasing around to the use of their strong arms and teeth to prove their power, which may create some injuries."

Silverback Gorilla Breaks Up Fight Between His Troop

There are lots of viewers like myself who love this family to bits. That's why it can be quite disturbing when we see the family having a fight like this. Our stomach starts to knot up and we feel upset. With the gorillas, when they have their disagreement it looks worse than it actually is, especially when Oumbi with his huge body mass comes charging and showing his teeth. It is quite terrifying to see how powerful he is and to hear all the screams from the two female gorillas. I only realized at home, watching in slow motion what really happened. Lope is being his usual self and has a go at Biddy his grandma. Grandma is having none of it this time and pushes Lope away. Ozala that sits beside her sees this and has a go at grandma for having a go at Lope. The watchful eye of the Silverback gorilla Oumbi reacts in an instant, the way a Silverback should and launches himself towards the females, trying to break up the fight between Ozala and Biddy. Little Shufai run towards the two females the same time Oumbi was moving. He first clung on to Biddi and then when mum emerged he clung on to her back, and was holding on right through the middle of it all. Biddy then got pushed out of the door by Oumbi, and then Oumbi has a go at Ozala. Lope did not get involved at first, he just looked at them, seemingly in shock that he might of caused the fight, but then he did get involved and he went for dad, grabbing his backside. When Oumbi let go and run away, Lope still had a hold of his back. A very noisy Ozala had go at Oumbi, while Oumbi did a few more laps running around until he went into the back to calm down. Biddy came back in from the back entrance. When Oumbi came out from the back again, he went into the corner, still quite agitated looking. Asante comes down from her top bunk, obviously witnessing it all from above. A little later when Oumbi comes out from the back, Lope makes way and you can see Ozala in the back with Shufai . She’s giving Oumbi the evil eye and everybody is staying well clear of the silverback. The most sorry I felt for little Shufai, putting himself in the middle of it all. I believe Oumbi just did what he’s supposed to. I think Ozala might of just overreacted in this instant. What do you think?

Bonobo Ape Youngster Tries To Lift The Big Ball To The Top

This is one of the Bonobo youngster from Twycross zoo. They've been given the huge blue balls to play with. The youngster is trying his best to get the ball to the top. Getting his hands and legs all twisted. He tries to pull the ball between his legs and when he falls, your heart misses a beat, but he's fine and tries again. Mum sitting at the bottom, obviously not worried about her son.

Bonobos are often confused with Chimpanzees but they distinguished by relatively long legs, pink lips, dark face and tail-tuft through adulthood, and parted long hair on its head. Chimpanzees and bonobos are closely related to humans.

Twycross Zoo is the only Zoo in the UK that breeds bonobos the endangered ape. Like so many animals these ape species are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is threatened by habitat destruction and human population growth. Foxes are not protected in the UK except for by The Hunting Act 2004 which banned hunting for them with dogs in England and Wales.

Funny Wiggly Butt Lope Making Himself Comfortable

You just have to love Lope when he walks with his wiggly butt and on his two feet. He picked up some of the wood shavings to find a spot to relax. When he's fed up carrying the shavings, he starts to casually hit it with his hands to move it along. He reminds me of the Grover Monster from Sesame street 😂. A little chest beat, looking around and relax for a second and then he had enough already of this relaxing malarkey. Lope walks off, going back inside from through the back door and Shufai follows him inside from the side door.

More From Lope And Shufai At Halloween

This is the last video from the Halloween party. Lope and Shufai are having some more fun with those empty bags.

Tug Of War Between Gorilla Brothers On Halloween

Starting of with a Tag Of War between the two Brothers. When Lope grabbed the Halloween bag of Shufai and beat his chest at him, I thought Shufai is just going to let go, but he didn't, he gave it a good pull. Lope did win in the end, but Shufai is getting braver all the time. You'll see this when Lope is having fun with the sack, Shufai comes over and tries to grab and pull it. Lope continues his play with his silly antics and you feel quite sorry for Shufai just sitting there watching Lope having fun, but he does get his own sack to play with a bit later.

As some of you may know, I'm a photographer. My favourite subjects are animals and nature, but also photograph other things like buildings. The only thing I don't photograph is humans :-)
More info on my about page. Thank you.

Watching A Baby Camel Eat Is Strangely Compelling

Watching this Baby Bactrian camel from the Dudley zoo chewing is strangely compelling.I love it when he stops in the middle and just looks at the camera, watch the nostrils!

Twycross Gorillas At Halloween

I am so happy that I've got some footage after all from our great gorilla family on Halloween. I thought I missed it all, after they had their celebration early. This one wasn't quite as big, but they had some fun.

So much was happening so quickly, that I tried to get all the family members in, but Asante was somewhere else again and apart from a little glimpse at the end I didn't get her enjoying the party.

Starting with Lope, seeing him beating on that bag with excitement and then doing his little roll is just something special. Biddy had already opened her bag when I got there and was munching on her stick. They do love to strip the bark of it.

Oumbi was sitting in the corner with a serious face on him, getting all the straw out of the bag to find the sticks and bits of food hidden in it. Little Shufai had more fun playing with the already empty sacks, dragging them along the grass. Biddy sitting there with a stick like that, she looks like she's ready for a battle if Lope tries anything on. 😂

When the keepers throw more food over the wall, Oumbi is the first to get to the edible paper pumpkins filled with some sort of leaves. ( they had real pumpkins at the earlier celebration) . On the other side, mum Ozala is having a little temper tantrum, by throwing the the empty sack in the air. Lope then gets hold of the paper pumpkin and you can see his delight. Holding it with both hand and he's definitely not going to be sharing. Shufai is having a look at Lope eating. Don't worry, he did get his share and the keeper says even if Shufai doesn't get anything at feeding time, he always gets his treats later on!  He manages to get another bag and investigates if there is still anything in it, giving it a good pad down.  He starts to drag the sack again and is trying to pull it around a tree, pulling it hard when it gets stuck. He manages to get it loose again and decides to drag it with his teeth this time.

Oumbi does a Ozala and is throwing the empty bag in the air. I wish I could of had ten hands that day as it was all happening so quickly, but there is more to come on Monday with another longer video!

Don't forget Friday And Monday Is Gorilla Video Day!

Fed Up, Swearing Keeper At Serengeti Park Germany

A fed up, swearing keeper from the Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen, Lower Saxony in Germany is trying to put the last black and white ruffed lemur into his inside enclosure so he can finish work, but the lemur has none of it. It's still nice and sunny outside and that's where the Lemur wants to stay. The animal gives the keeper a run-around and the guy is not pleased at all. He wants to finish work and is getting quite agitated, starts swearing in German and even throws his keys on the floor while saying things like: 'Ich kriege das Kotzen mit den Viechern hier ( loosely translated: It sucks with those creatures here' ) Scheiße ( shit), jetzt reicht es hier aber langsam ( I had enough now) and ich will hier weg ( I want to leave).

Benji The Orangutan At Halloween

Happy Halloween everybody!
Benji The Orangutan At Halloween https://buff.ly/2CVajjQ
Dudley zoo always gives the Orangutans a sheet to cover up at this time of the year and they love slinging it over their head and walk around with it. It must give them some protection from the cold as well. Not sure if he is too happy with his choice of costume this year as he has a bit of a strop on when he pulls that tire. He has a little twirl and decides to go inside. When back outside, he is still undercover eating some grass.
I'm looking forward to the Orangutans getting their new enclosure. Dudley Zoo is half way there to fund this.
Dudley Zoological Gardens is a 40-acre zoo located within the grounds of Dudley Castle in the town of Dudley, in the Black Country region of the West Midlands, England.  In the past couple of years more and more has been done to improve the zoo with some great new enclosures.

Enrichment And Food For The Gorillas

I always get asked about enrichment for the gorillas. Most of it always happens when the zoo isn't open for visitors or the weekends which I try and avoid because it’s too busy. When I visit them, I only see what is left of it. Shufai played with some leftover paper from a cardboard box and Ozala was eating the last bits of food that were hidden in the hessian sack. Lope loves his occasional Kong Toy, which they filled with something sticky. He had to try and get it out with the stick or his fingers. When he finished he threw it, unfortunately I didn’t catch the throw. Inside there was a gym ball that was surprisingly still inflated. Lope had a little touch, but wasn't quite sure of what to make of the ball and avoided it all day after that. The rest of the family wasn't too impressed with it either. Sticks and trees are always available for them as they love to chew the bark of it. Asante prefers to take her food up to the top bunk, that’s why you can never see her through feeding time. During the day there are several feedings. A scatter feed, where the food is thrown over the wall from the visitor site so they have to forage for it in the grass. Sometimes they get locked inside and staff places food outside including all over the climbing frame. Or other times they get locked in the back away from visitors when they do their medical checks. They did a big feed outside where Ozala got hold of all the fat balls, as you can see she loves them. Another time Lope got hold cauliflower and some letters, he didn’t hold back. A look at the little waterfall and pools with Biddy in the back, leaning against the warm wall sunbathing as usual. Normally the family doesn’t go anywhere near the pool or water, not even during the heatwave, but when a little food from the scatter feed has fallen in, that is when Ozala braves the water in fishes out what she can.

Mischievous Gorilla Lope Prodding Mum

Mum Ozala and her son Shufai moved some wood shaving up to the top bunk to have a rest. Lope is having none of it and comes charging in and gives the two a poke with his finger from under the bed. Ozala, understandable is not pleased. She's trying to keep Lope away, but he's not giving up. After Lope has another go, mum Ozala moves with Shufai off the bed and you think he's about to feel Ozalas force, but she just calmly stands there. Maybe her look to Lope says it all.

Is Lope Going To Let Shufai Play With The New Toy?

When Twycross Zoo put a tyre in the Gorilla enclosure, Lope was the first to investigate. This time Shufai is trying to have a little play. He only manages a couple of seconds before Lope comes charging. Lope has swing on the tyre before he sees dad coming and suddenly starts running. Even though Oumbi wasn't charging at him, I think Lope new to just get out of his way. That gave Shufai a clear coast to continue his play with the tyre. He does his usual circling when suddenly Lope comes charging back. Little Shufai is quickly taking cover over by their mum Ozala. With Lope out of the way again, and Asante watching, Shufai continues his play.

Lope The Gorilla Doesn't Get Tired Of His New Toy

Back to our lovable Lope again this week. He's got a new toy, a tyre. Running straight up to it to investigate it. Swinging , beating his chest with one of the strap in his mouth and just being silly.

Still trying to get to grips with so many negative comments about the last Oumbi and Lope videos, from people that don't really know the family or just hate zoos. Can I just say: the doors of the gorilla housing to the outside of the enclosure are open most of the time during the day for the gorillas to choose when and if they want to go outside. It only shuts when the keepers scatter the food outside. They've also got a small area at the back which they can access at any time to get away from us humans. Just because I do close ups, doesn't mean that's all the space they have. Outside they have a climbing frame, a little waterfall, a hut and a den. Yes the enclosure is not the newest out there and hopefully they will get something better in the future. The tiling inside is not the best, but unfortunately necessary as they do need to clean the inside several times a day and they’ve got plenty of wood shavings to make their beds on the floor or up on the climbing frame ( inside and outside) . Twycross Zoo opened it’s doors in 1963 to fulfil their dream of protecting primates. The zoo is constantly changing and has an ambitious Masterplan to change lots more enclosures. They just finished the Chimpanzee Eden project and before that the gibbons got a new enclosure , with lots more to come in the future. Twycross supports over 55 conservation and welfare projects from 27 different countries around the world.

Silverback Gorilla Trying To Keep Calm As He Puts Up With Sons Antics

A longer video than usual and I'm sure the Silverback Gorilla Oumbi and his son Lope will keep you entertained.
Oumbi is having a rest, well he is trying to, under the pavilion. Making himself comfortable, while Lope is being silly on the other side of the wall. Strutting his stuff, his face covered in wood wool. He does a little twist and beats his chest and then he goes to work on being the most annoying son he can be. :-). He looks around the corner and stares at dad., he's tries hard to ignore him. Lope beats his chest again and bangs on the wall where his dad is leaning against. The second time he does it, Oumbi hits back at the wall as to say keep it down boy. We all know Lope by now, he doesn't give up easily, so he does it again and again. When Lope does his spins and it gone quite Oumbi hits the wall with his fist, like he almost missed Lopes annoying antics. Look at Lope after his spins, he's just resting his head casually on his head lying down. Looking in dads direction and off he goes again. Than he tries a different method coming running from the other site. Oumbi beats his chest. The second time Lope comes round the other site is just so funny, he just pokes his head around the wall slowly and then the rascal throws a stick at dad and beats his chest! I would just love to know what Oumbi is thinking. Looking at his face now, he's starting to get more annoyed and waiting for his sons next move.

Gorilla Lope Master Of Sliding - Rolling Down The Slope

This is a small compilation of Lope on the Slope. As you know he just loves rolling and sliding down the slope in his enclosure and these are some funny moments. Sliding down backwards towards mum and Shufai and Ozala not quite sure what to make of that. Running and sliding down the slope into grandma Bidi. Running and sliding, running and rolling. Lope just loves it.

Lope And Shufai Chasing Each Other

Lope and Shufai having a blast chasing each other through their inside enclosure. Into one door out of the other.

Fun Wrestling Gorilla Brothers Lope And Shufai

Lope and baby brother Shufai are having a fun wrestling match again. It always amazes me how gentle Lope can be when he wants to be. He's letting Shufai take the lead again.

Jambo The Hairless Chimp Uses Stick To Tend To His Wound

Jambo the hairless chimp is using a little stick to tend to his wound. I'm not quite sure what he is trying to do. Maybe he tries to get some dirt out of it.

For the people that don't know Jambo:
The question on your mind is, why is Jambo hairless? People also call him the “naked chimp”. Some people think they shaved him or that he is ill. The truth is, that Jambo has alopecia, a medical term for hair loss and he had it since adolescence. He is now 35 years old and with his hair gone you can simply see how powerfully muscular he is. Being hairless hasn’t stopped him from anything, rather the opposite as he’s the alpha male and at the moment still rules his habitat, but this is challenged by the younger male called Kibali. Which is completely natural and the fights aren't for the faint hearted.

Oumbi The Huge Silverback Gorilla Has His Gym Session

I just love watching Oumbi the male gorilla from the Twycross Zoo. He is the most active just before lunchtime, like everybody else, he's getting all excited. They are waiting for the doors to close so the keepers can scatter the food outside. Apart from a few outburst that he has to keep his family in check, he is quite happy being mostly just sitting, eating, relaxing and sleeping , which does make you wonder how he gets all those muscles. Well now you'll find out. He's doing his daily routine of Pull-ups! Just look how he manages to do them with so much ease! When he does his first pull up you’ll see mother Ozala in the background running with baby Shufai. After he had his pull-ups he’s running through the enclosure to let everybody know he’s the boss and everybody moves quickly out of his way. Asante is resting up the top and you can see Oumbi having a little dig at her. He continues with some more gym exercise, before he has another go at the others. Oumbi is normally the first one out after lunch, that is if Lope doesn’t get there first! Than it’s Ozala wit baby Shufai. Asante and Bidi are always the last ones to go out and giving all the others the chance of feeding first, until they are getting there share.

Adorable Baby Rhino Wants To Play With Resting Mother

Akeno the greater one-horned rhino calf from Chester Zoo is just cuteness overload. He runs around, with the cute little wiggly ears. Headbutting his mum every so often. When mum decided she likes a bit of a lie down, Akeno bumps in to her leg, then walks around her and jumps on her back! While on top of her he gives her little nudges, one after another: Com'mon mum I want to play. No time to sleep now :-) . When that is not working he gets off mums back and nudges her in the butt instead and runs off. Continuing running around her. A few more nudges in his mother's face, another run around and then finally, his mum is getting up again

Gorilla Lope Steals Food Of Grandma Biddy

The cheeky little so and so Lope is stealing the food from Grandma Biddy. He not only steals the one branch of tree, no he steals two. Looking at grandmas face, you really feel sorry for her. To rub it in, Lope seems to enjoy his stolen food a bit too much. :-) So gran goes inside, to get herself some more. Hopefully she will have all those for herself.

Chimpanzee Loves Pulling Faces At Camera And Then Applauds

This is Tojo from the Twycross Zoo in England and she loves her own reflection. You can always see her with a CD running around the enclosure. Now she had the opportunity to see herself in a camera and she made the most of it by pulling funny faces at it and then she applauds herself. She still didn't let go of her piece of CD in her hand.
In 2016 a mirror self-recognition test if a non-human being has the capacity of visual self-recognition. Chimpanzees were one of the animals, that breezed through the MSR test as recognizing themselves.

Gorilla Mother Ozala With Her Sons

Ozala and Lope have a little wrestle , with mum being a shield to Shufai. Ozala is trying hard not to let Lope anywhere near his brother.
The best bit has to be where Ozala grabs the wood wool and just plonks it on Lope, as if to say here take this, shut up and behave. lol. When Lope starts again mum gets hold of his neck and really has him good. She then moves on top of him and Shufai is not faced at all, he's just clinging on to mums back. Lope manages to wiggle himself free and finally sits down.

Jambo The Hairless Chimpanzee Is Getting Ready To Go To Sleep

Jambo the hairless Chimpanzee is getting ready to got to sleep. Gathering all his wood wool for his nest and carrying it to the place where he wants to sleep. As he starts yawning, you can see his impressive sets of teeth. When his back is turned to the camera, just laying there you almost think he's human. While Jumbo is ready to got to sleep, meet his daughter Genet who is sitting relaxed on the climbing ribbons scratching her back with a stick.

Look at this compilation of the various apes like the gibbon with its long legs and arms dangling down while walking; then there are the chimpanzees with their funny walks and even Jambo the hairless chimp walks on two feet! Oumbi the big silverback gorilla has a go at it as well while picking up his food, but the master at this is the gorilla youngster called Lope! With him you can just see how much he loves to walk on two feet. He's just got that real swagger and can show everybody else how it is done.

Jambo The Fascinating Hairless Chimpanzee Eats Outside

Now the heat is not as intense anymore, Jumbo can enjoy a bit more time in his new outside enclosure. Enjoying a leak and some other veg that got scattered around the outside.

For people who don't know Jambo. Jambo is from the Twycross Zoo in England. He has got alopecia, a form of hairloss just like humans get, but if you've seen the other videos of him, it hasn't stopped him doing anything as he's the alpha male of the troop and he found love as well.

Gorilla Mum Lending A Helping Hand When Lope Has Got An Itch

Gorilla Mum Lending A Helping Hand When Lope Has Got An Itch

We all know what it's like to have an itch and you just can't reach it. Well Lope the gorilla youngster from the Twycross zoo has got the same problem. He's slapping himself and trying everything to reach the itchy spot. His foot moving to give him a bit more momentum. Oumbi lying next to him and his hand flipping onto Lope and trying to grab him. It all gets interrupted by Shufai suddenly pouncing on his big brother and quickly running away again. Later mum Ozala gives Lope that helping hand to investigate that itch. Lopes face says it all. Common Ozala give it good scratch!
I suddenly started itching. :-)

Silverback Gorilla Oumbi Can Be Very Patience

Oumbi might like to display his dominance by charging and poking out his chest at everybody, but he can also be very calm when he wants to be and in this video he has got a lot of patience with his two sons as they love running circles around him. If it wasn't for him moving later on, you would of thought that he was a statue. There is a little pause when Oumbi seems to put Lope on hold for a few seconds, but than the brothers continue. Watch Lope as he moves around slowly, being cheeky again, he gives Oumbi a slight nudge with his hand.

Nosey Cows

This is something a bit different. These are the wild, roaming nosey mixed breed cows from the Chasewater Country Park, Burntwood Staffordshire England. There are quite unique with their markings, something a bit different from your average black and white cows. Cows have always been known to be very nosey and these certainly live up to this. On my photo walk these just came up to me from the woods to have a good close up look at what I was doing and a good slobber all over the camera. These cattle are used for conservation grazing, which plays a vital role in maintaining and improving vital habitats. They are often referred to as the Chasewater’s four-legged gardeners. Every summer they can graze freely at the nature reserve. They are well used to people and as you can see they couldn’t be any friendlier. They have such an inquisitive nature and clever identity that they simply make me smile. I just feel sorry for them with all those pesky flies, I only had to endure these flies during filming; they have to live with it day in and day out. Chasewater Country Park situated in Staffordshire, England where the channel meets the waterway reservoir. It covers 360 hectares, including 90 hectares of water. The surrounding heathland and woods support many different species of wildlife, including deer. The reservoir gives the Canals basic water to keep up levels in the Birmingham Canal Network, and beyond.

An  update on Jambo and nothing much has changed. He's still running around, keeping everybody in check and kicking the door to show his power. As it is very hot outside at the moment, he seems to know wants god for him, avoiding a sunburn and is staying in doors most of the time.

Jambo has got alopecia, which never stopped him doing anything. He found love and he is the alpha male of the troup.

The Wrestling Continues With The Gorilla Mother And Her Son

And the wrestling continues. Ozala and Lope are still in a full swing wrestling match. That's until Oumbi comes charging in with little Shufai by its side who runs straight to mum. Lope didn't seem too pleased that dad interrupted the play between him and his mum.

Gorilla Lope Is Wrestling His Mother

Another longer video. :-) Lope is strolling up to his mum Ozala and starts staring at her. After having trouble with his baby teeth earlier and being quite occupied in pulling it out, he’s now back to his old tricks again annoying his mum. Ozala looks at Lope and then grabs his head. You can just imagine her saying: “stop that staring boy”. This starts a wrestling fight between the two that doesn’t seem to end. Lope keeps the play fight going, maybe trying to measure his strength? When he’s getting a bit too full on, his mum pushes him into the climbing frame with quite some power, which makes Lope stop for a second, but we all know he doesn’t give up easily and he starts again. When they sit opposite and Lope grabs mums arm gently, but Ozala just pulls away and then they start again. When again they sit opposite each other Ozala made me laugh when she pinched Lope’s belly/Pulled his hair. They continue their wrestling fight. When Ozala things she’s got a minute peace, Lope is coming in from the back, moving slowly and sly, sitting himself next to her. He uses the hose to hit it against the wall, just missing Ozala and then the fight continues ……

Male Elephant Baby Pushes Sister Of Slope, But She Gets Her Revenge

Male Elephant Baby Pushes Sister Of Slope, But She Gets Her Revenge

The elephant calves from the Chester Zoo are having some fun playing. Aayu Hi Way the older male baby in the herd decided to show off his strength by pushing his sister Indali of the slope. Later she gets her revenge, when big sister Nandita lends a helping trunk. Indali is giving her some extra strength by pushing the big sister, so she can push Aayu. Nandita decides than she had enough, but Indali gives her big sister a comon lets finish this nudge. While Nandita and Aayu pushing each other, Indali comes from the back and just decides to push both of them instead. It's great to have such a big family of Elephants at the Chester zoo. There is always someone to play with.

Close Up Of Gorilla Youngster Trying To Pull Out His Loose Baby Tooth fairy

A bit of caution as this video includes many close up shots of the loose tooth and it might not be for everybody, but nothing we haven’t all been through! :-)

This is the long detailed version of the day when Lope has a loose baby tooth.

As soon as I got to Twycross Zoo, Lope was playing with his loose tooth, obviously trying to get it out. He gives it a good wiggle, but it’s staying put. If anybody wonders why he has a black tongue, apparently it’s because of the food he eats. It is because of something called tannins which is present in many plant foods.

He keeps biting the fire hose and beating his chest at mum Ozala, with little Shufai sitting by her site suckling (haven’t seen him do that for a while). Even though with his tooth ache, he still takes a grab for his little brother, but mum is quick to intervene. Don’t jump when you see Lope licking the wooden pole, as Asante came running and jumping over the pole given Lope and mum a bit of a wtf did just happen. :-) Lope seems to love licking things, like he wants to get rid of the taste of the blood from his tooth. Just like humans, you just can’t stop playing with the tooth.

Ozala brings some comfort when Lope is lying there starting to lick his face. He first enjoys the attention he’s getting, but then when it gets too much he has a wrestle with mum instead. At this point he still seem to have his tooth.

In the earlier video, you can see Lope losing his tooth after biting the hose and wrestling with mum, so I’m not quite sure what made him lose it in the end, the biting or the wrestling.

Silverback Gorilla Realizes Looking After His Kids Is Not So Easy

Silverback Gorilla Realizes Looking After His Kids Is Not So Easy

While the girls are out :-), Oumbi the silverback gorilla seems to be stuck with looking after the kids again. Not an easy job when Lope is after some attention. You can just image Lopes brain going hundred miles an hour trying to think of a way to annoy his dad. When he wiggles with his bum and swings his leg out a bit too close to dads head, Oumbi lets him get away with it and tries to ignore him, but as Lope doesn't give up that easily he does it again. This time the Silverback reacts by pushing him away and showing his teeth. Lope sits there for a second chewing his stick like nothing has happened and then he starts again. Lope obviously knows that he can push him little bit further. Oumbi moves into a different position and Lope has his backside to him again, that doesn’t quite work this time, so instead turns around at his resting dad and touches his face. Nope first time didn’t  work, so he has to try again. That did the job; Oumbi shows the teeth at Lope again and lifts up his arm. That’s enough for Lope to back off. Lope sits down, looking to the floor like he is sulking that nobody wants to play with him. Common Dad, have a little fun and play with your son. :-)

Gorilla Lope And Shufai Playing Outside

Gorilla Lope And Shufai Playing Outside

The Gorillas family is outside eating and Lope is starting to chase Shufai. Not too much running in this hot weather, they prefer to wrestle instead. Watch Oumbi later when little Shufai runs past him. It looks like Dad is trying to trip him up, slow him down or he just wants to be part of his sons fun and games. OR, he just wants to look good in front of Ozala, show her that he does keep an eye on these two.

Gorilla Brothers Play Close To Sleepy Giant

It's still hot in England and the gorillas prefer the inside to the outside heat. For the two brothers Lope and Shufai is playtime again. Oumbi looks sleepy and is relaxing in the back - like a sleepy giant compared to his sons. While Lope is sitting there holding the rope, Shufai is making a grand entrance from above sliding down the rope to play with his brother. They play so close to oumbi again, that i was just surprised Oumbi kept his calm.

Fighting hairless chimpanzees cause tense scene at zoo

These are the muscular hairless chimpanzees from the Twycross Zoo in Atherstone, England. Jambo and Mongo are a father and son duo that are both suffering from hereditary alopecia, which is the general medical term for hair loss. When chimps look like they are fighting, it's actually called displaying. It's about intimidating the opponent with lots of uproar and bluster. Intense!

Newborn Gibbon Baby Happy When Mum Comes Back

The Lar gibbon mum Meo leaves her newborn baby son Gary ( yes Gary, sorry, still can't get over the name, who ever choose that one? lol) on the grass while she looks for food. Little Gary enjoys a flower to eat while mum was gone. When Meo comes back the baby's eyes light up and he grabs his mum. It takes a bit of a struggle to find mums teat, but he gets there in the end.

You can't help but smile when you see Lope the gorilla youngster. Here with a spring in his step, starting off with his famous commando roll, then swinging his arms in a big way walking like a human and beating his chest. Then he's got you in stitches when he is not only walking on two feet, but he starts running like it as well. Another roll and another little jump. That's our Lope.

Mum Defends Newborn Diana Monkey Against Energetic Big Brother

Mum defends newborn diana monkey against over energetic brother - sound familiar? :-) I know gorilla Lope was a handful when his little brother was born, but this one must of drunk a whole shop full of energy drinks.

I featured this family before when first-time parents mum, De’Arly and dad Manu had Khari in April 2016. Khari was the first Diana monkey to be born at Twycross since 1987! Two years later and Khari has now  got a sibling! (not named yet), another great achievement from Twycross zoo and their breeding program for this rare type of monkey. I can only feel sorry for the parents. They already had a lot to deal with having such energetic son, but with the newborn and a brother that wants constant attention from its parents it will be quite a challenge for De’Arly and Manu. Well more for Mum De’Arly, as Dad seemed to hide behind the trees most of the time. Actually the hiding bit sounds familiar as well :-)

Oumbi The Silverback Gorilla Is In A Doghouse

Oumbi The Silverback Gorilla Is In A Doghouse
Ozala the female Gorilla from Twycross zoo seemed to have a problem with Oumbi, the father of their kids. Both the adults are sitting outside, but finding it hard to look at each other.
Shufai their son is behind mums back. When Ozala finally does look at Oumbi with an irritable face, he starts looking back at her. They hold their gaze for a second, but then Ozala makes a move towards the Silverback – like she is telling him to stop looking at her. Then Oumbi runs off in a huff, arms waving and he looks like he just wants some peace and quiet. I can hear him in my mind saying, women just leave it, stop nagging me. lol He moves to another corner, but gets followed by Ozala with Shufai on her back. He then gives Ozala a little push and runs off again. Everybody follows Oumbi again, but walk past him as he just sits down. Finally he gets some peace. For now anyway :-)

The Chase Is On For Gorilla Siblings Lope And Shufai

The chase is on for the Gorilla siblings Lope and Shufai. Shufai is chasing Lope around the enclosure which seems to be quite a common site now. Little Shufai really enjoys chasing after his brother and Lope loves the attention. They chasing each other that much, that both of them just have a well deserved rest afterwards.

Silverback Gorilla Can Take Only So Much From His Sons

Lope and Shufai having a play fight in front of their big silverback dad who is sitting quietly in the corner. Shufai, the youngest of the western lowland gorillas at the Twycross Zoo is coming up to the window as to say look at everybody and then runs back to his brother Lope. When those two are tumbling a bit too close to Oumbi, the Silverback grabs Lope gently and turns him around without any effort. The brothers continue to play, but Lope gives Oumbi just that little glance of disapproval as to say we’re only playing dad and anyway Shufai is starting it – it’s not me! :-) Shufai continues to play with Lope while Lope is fighting dad’s arm, which is nearly the same size. Dad just can’t stop himself getting involved and keeps grabbing Lope, but Oumbi seems pretty relaxed with it all. The brothers continue their play. Even when Shufai hits his head, they continue. When you see Shufai’s approach to Lope, you can almost see what the future holds. He is not one to give up easily! Oumbi makes himself comfortable on the floor while continuing to watch.
Lope decides it’s time to annoy dad some more, by trying to grab his face. Little Shufai is quickly running to the other end, he probably knows what is coming. Lope continues by beating his chest in front of Oumbi and just being silly in general. That was the last straw for the silverback as he first pouts his lips and it takes only another chest beat from Lope to make those massive muscles move like a lighting strike launching towards Lope. His son managed to get away, but his dad certainly made his feelings very clear.

Lope The Gorilla Is Getting Bulldozed By His Gran

Lope and Shufai having a play inside. When Oumbi the Silverback runs over to Asante. Both the brothers are watching Oumbi and don't realize gran coming from the right. Shufai managed to get out of the way just before gran makes her move, but totally bulldozes Lope. It still makes me laugh everytime I watch that bit. Lope getting up, all bewildered, thinking wtf just happened? It takes a few seconds until Lope gathers himself again and than just walks over to the plank to have a quick rest with his feet dangling down. He then continues his play with little Shufai.

Baby Elephant Takes On Big Brother in A Playfight

This is the baby elephant Anjan Hi Way from the Chester zoo in Cheshire England who is having playfight with its brother Aayu Hi Way.
Chester zoo in Cheshire England was in for a surprise when the mom Thi Hi Way gave birth. She was 3 month overdue and returned to her normal weight making everyone believe she lost the baby, but to everybody’s surprise she managed to deliver this cute bundle of joy on the 17th of May 2018 at 3 am, after a 25 month pregnancy. She gave birth to a baby boy called Anjan Hi Way. In this video you can see Anjan Hi Way approaching his bigger half brother Aayu Hi Way. He isn’t too pleased and straight away knocks him over with his trunk. Another little push and then the newborn runs back to its mom. Later the big brother is pursuing Anjan again, but the little one is having none of it and pushes back. Even though he is only a fraction of his brother’s weight he stands his ground and keeps shoving back. He is definitely not an easy push over and doesn’t give up easily, but still Aayu manages to knock him off his feet again. The feisty baby turns around and shoves back again. Just typical sibling rivalry play.
Chester Zoo has got seven Elephants, incluing four calves in the herd of the Hi Way family. They are: Thi (born 24.04.1981), Sithami (born 31.12.1997) , Sundara ( born 07.03.2004), Nandita ( born 20.08.2015), Aayu ( born 18.01.2017), Indali (born 17.12.2016) and the new arrival Anjan. They also have Anjans dad Aung Bo (born 17.07.2001) and female Maya the oldest born 1966.

Cuteness Overload With This Rare Rhino Baby Having A Run Around

Newborn Rhino Is Having A Run Around

This greater one-horned rhino calf is just cuteness overload! A new arrival for Chester Zoo. Running around like crazy and headbutting his mum. Also known as the greater one-horned rhinoceros and great Indian rhinoceros the baby was born at the Chester Zoo, Cheshire England at around 6pm on 3rd of May 2018. It is a male and they named him Akeno, meaning “beautiful sunrise”.  Asha his 11 year old mum, had a 16 month pregnancy and only a 20-minute labour. The dad Beni is separated from these two, presumably for safety reasons.  In the video, at first he is sharing a meal with his mother, a tree branch. After his breakfast he seemed full of energy, running around and having these little cute outbursts. He is quite a hand full, but mom Asha look as if she is taking it all in her stride.  It’s is so cute, watching him run backwards and forwards to mom, having that little headbutt with her , just so he is close to her. When Akeno finds a little bit of grass, he shakes it about so that it flies through the air. When the bit of grass comes down again, he seems to jump in surprise.

The folded skin of these Rhinos look like armour plating and did you see those little ears? Aren’t they just the best, wiggling like that? The greater one horned rhino is listed as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Akeno is a big boost to the threatened species breeding programme. Did you know :  a calf can drink 20-30 litres of milk per day and grows by 1-2 kg daily! They are excellent swimmers and can even dive!

Wild Dartmoor Pony Charges At Cow

Wild Dartmoor Pony Charges At Cow

This is beautiful Dartmoor in England with its far reaching landscape views. You’ve got the famous wild roaming Dartmoor Ponies one of the horse breeds, cows and sheep which all graze freely on the moors all year round. You’ll see the horses and cows and even a few new born foals laying in the grass near the Hay Tor rocks.  The cows are grazing nearby, until they decided “the grass was greener on the other side” and got a bit too close to the beautiful black horses. All this space, but the cattle decided they wanted to be where the horses are. One of the cows was determined to try its luck and approached a horse, but the Stallion didn’t take it likely and started bolting towards the cow. I slowed this part down.  You have never seen a cow move this quickly.

The Dartmoor Ponies are an iconic sight with a stunning backdrop of the moors. In 1950 it is said there were around thirty thousand ponies on the moor, unfortunately now they are only about 1500. There are three breeds of ponies on Dartmoor the Purebred Dartmoor Ponies, Dartmoor Heritage Ponies and the Shetland Ponies.

Hay tor rocks or just Hay Tor is a granite tor, a natural beauty spot and one of Dartmoor's most famous landmarks. Dartmoor is protected by National Park status and is about 370 square miles in size. A big part of this is owned by the Duke of Cornwall. Even though 57.3% is owed privately, in contrasts from other National Parks in England and Wales; it has been a nominated Access Land, which gives walkers the freedom to roam. It is necessary for all the horses, ponies’ cows and sheep to be registered with the Dartmoor Commoners’ Council.  Cows have tags in their ears and the ponies and horses are branded.

Orangutan Youngster Goes Ape Over Popcicle

This is the Orangutan youngster from the Paignton Zoo in Devon England. The zoo staff had a surprise for the Borneo orangutans; they put a giant fruit flavoured ice Popsicle in their habitat and also a nice big blanket to play with. The popsicle seem to have all kind of stuff in in like mixed fruit, veg and herbs. All the favourite foods they like. Orangutan Tatau was that happy, she went totally crazy over her surprise this morning.

She wrapped herself around the ice lolly with her blanket, as if to make it her own and nobody else could have it. She then started to spin like crazy like a whirlwind. Round and round and round. You wonder what she feels like. Do Orangutans get dizzy? Certainly watching it does. She just doesn’t give up spinning and having the time of her live.

Tatau was born on the 11th of April 2013 to mother Mali and father Demo. It says on a plaque that she use to be very timid, but now has tantrums when she doesn’t get her own way. She loves to play and show off, which very obvious from this video footage.

Time Lapse Driving Through A Beautiful Snowy Forest

A sped up time-lapse of this beautiful and amazing winter drive through the snowy forest by the Lake Bohinj in Slovenia. Every tree covered in thick snow. An empty road covered in ice and snow.

French Pink Inflatable Men Invade British Supermarket

As part of the Birmingham International Dance Festival these four pink men that look like sumo wrestlers invading the British Supermarket Tesco. It all started off at the Victoria Square and they are dancing/ wobbling bumping into the bewildered shoppers in the Birmingham City centre in England. They started at the Victoria square by the British museum and moved on from there towards and into the Birmingham supermarket. A huge crowd followed the vibrant, unusual performers up the escalator to the upper floor of the shop. Where they choose the big windows so everybody outside could still watch them perform. One of the pink man decided to take some toilet rolls of the shelfs and start throwing them to the other guy. They kept throwing the pack backwards and forwards. They were having fun playing catch. You can just hear a guy saying that the security hasn’t said anything yet. Another saying “ You can do anything when you’re dressed up like this” Apparently the supermarket did not know about this invasion. They just had this idea on the day. They bounced their way back to the escalator, but not in a normal way, they actually went down on the railing of the escalator all the way down. Walking out of the supermarket they got clapped by the entire crowd that watched them from below. Tesco has been a great supermarket that obviously enjoyed this strange and unexpected entertainment as no one of the security guys stopped them in their tracks. All a bit of fun for the crowd of the Birmingham city centre.

They are French performers part of an art group called La Grande Phrase with choreography Cie Didier Theron and are travelling to different cities to show their performance. Every act is different and they always wearing different inflatable suits.

Lope The Gorilla Ice Breaker

Lope The Gorilla Ice Breaker

Yep Lope again and he is still busy with the ice. This time Lope took as many pieces as he could carry, ran up to the hut and threw one piece into the hut. After he played with the ice for a bit it all becomes clear why he threw it. They were a little bit too big for him, so he decided to give them the Lope treatment. He throws them against the wall and the roof of the hut to break them up and scrape the little pieces off the wall to eat.

Hilarious Moment As Lope Pulls Faces At Silverback Behind Flap

Hilarious Moment As Lope Pulls Faces At Silverback Behind Flap

A short while back Twycross Zoo had some new flaps fitted to the Western Lowland Gorillas house. They weren't see through before, but now they are and as you can see Lope is making the most of it. Pulling funny faces while Oumbi his dad is on the other side and watching him. Unfortunately I've only got the last bit of this on video, so I slowed it down a little for you to see how silly Lope is. When Oumbi has enough of Lopes shenanigans, he storms inside. Lopes brother Shufai runs up to the flap to have a look what all the commotion is about. By the time I get round to the viewing area inside, it all calmed down a bit with Oumbi pulling Lopes head in a playful manner. Lope being Lope, he can't let things lie and sits himself next to the huge Silverback. Just sit back and enjoy Lopes and Oumbis playful interaction.

Lake Bohinj

The snow is falling off the trees, at the wonderful wintry beautiful landscape of the Lake Bohinj region in Slovenia. Forest walk covered in thick fresh snow. The magical look of the Sava Bohinjka River, with its turquoise colours and the lake itself, looking all silvery with a slight hint of green in the water. Tree branches that fallen into the lake covered with snow. In the background, the mountains and trees all reflecting in the lake. Fisherman standing beside the lake, waiting for their catch of the day on this cold, but beautiful morning. The charming stag believed to guard the edges around the lake. You can see the Cerkev Sv. Romance Blossoming For Hairless Chimpanzee

Romance Blossoming For Hairless Chimpanzee

The fascinating Hairless Chimpanzee Jambo from the Twycross Zoo in England is all relaxed in his new enclosure called Eden. He seems totally in Love and besotted with his female mate. He is caressing her foot gently, while she is playing hard to get and keeps pulling away. Just like humans, you can see her later putting her hands around his neck in a loving gesture.  Then she starts to kiss his bald head gently. The next bit is just amazing as Jambo pulls away and stretches out his lips towards her. She then gently bites his lips and pulls on it. She continues to investigate his teeth for a few seconds before biting his lip again. He then continues with a French kiss, sticking out his tongue. He even closes his eyes for a second to enjoy the intimate moment. Afterwards he gently bites her brows. You can easily see how animal love doesn’t differ much from our own. Even an alpha male, that shows everybody who the boss is by intimidating the opponent with lots of noise and bluster, that he can be also very gentle. An amazing animal couple. And for Jambo it shows that being a bit different doesn’t stop you from doing anything, from becoming the boss to a gentle lover.

The question on your mind is, why is Jambo hairless? People also call him the “naked chimp”. Some people think they shaved him or that he is ill. The truth is, the ape has alopecia, a medical term for hair loss and he had it since adolescence. He is now 35 years old and with his hair gone you can simply see how powerfully muscular he is. Being hairless hasn’t stopped him from anything, rather the opposite as he’s the alpha male and rules his habitat.

More Wrestling Mania From Gorilla Lope And Grandma

As promised some more Lope and Bidi Wrestling action. In this video Bidi makes the first move in approaching Lope. My longest video yet and I hope you will enjoy watching those two play. Lopes big smile, showing his teeth, you can really see how much fun he's having. Climbing on grandma's back, doing his twirls, rolls and repeatedly "ambushing" Bidi. If only all the grandmas were this much fun :-)

Gorilla Lope And Grandma In Fun Wrestling Match

Lope the Western lowland gorilla youngster surprised me on the weekend. I never seen him have this much contact with Bidi his grandma. Lope is just full of beans. He's literally running rings around her :-) He slowly approaches her at first and then dashes and pounds on her. Grandma seemed to be ready to have a play and you can see both of them really enjoy the wrestling match. You can't help but laugh when Lope starts to move away from her and starts to circle around her with grandma moving around as well and watching every move. I watched it that many times, I got dizzy. lol When lope finally stops circling both have a stare at each other and I think Bidi is glad she can have a little breather.
Lope has one more pounce and then both are resting FOR NOW

Fascinating Hairless Chimp Shows He's The Boss In His New Habitat

Finally after years of planning, Twycross zoo in Atherstone England opened the new 1,160sqm semi-translucent Chimpanzee habitat called Eden, which is designed to replicate the wild environment as close as possible.

The first 5 chimps have now been moved in and the public got the first look at the new home. They have been in the new enclosure for a few days before opening to get used to their new home. Looking at Jambo, the alpha male with his sidekick Rosie, they seemed still quite unsure of it all. Looking around and just generally taking it all in. At times it seems like they are still stunned and can’t quite figure everything out. For now, only the inside is open as the bad weather prevented the outside to be finished. The landscape needs a bit more work.  Also they are waiting to move the rest of the chimpanzees over before they open the outdoors and as you can see in the beginning of the video, Twycross staff has already done a great job and the size is just amazing.

Jambo has a good look around and even comes up to the window to say hello to the visitors, while Rosie found a little side window to look at all the people. More climbing going on for Jambo and then he shows everybody that he is still the boss , the alpha male jumps down and runs forcefully towards the metal door and kicks it with his powerful legs.  Not just the once, he runs up to the door again and does the same, before he returns to be calm and just sitting there on the climbing straps.

Snow Leopard Cub Trying To Climb Wall To Get To Her Twin

It is National Sibling Day

Play time for the snow leopards at the Twycross zoo. One of the cubs got up to the wall, with her twin trying to get to her from below. She is having a hard time figuring out how her sister got up there, trying to climb and jump up the wall, but only manages to get half way up. It's only on the last jump to the left when she realises that it wasn't actually that difficult to get up the wall as her sister just walks off it. They have a little chase and a tumble.

Looking at them it is hard to believe they are only just a year old. They just grown so quickly.
The two twin Snow leopard cubs, both female were born in April 2017.This is the third pair for mum Irma and dad Suou.

Did You Ever See An Orangutan Enjoy Gum This Much

Benji, the large Borneo Orangutan male from the Dudley zoo in the West Midlands, England enjoys to chew, but what can you do if you haven’t got any real gum? Not a problem for this clever Orangutan. He just rips of some cardboard from the box and uses that as chewing gum substitute. He’s enjoying it that much; you can hear the noise he is making and see his huge teeth while chewing. His mother obviously never told him to close his mouth while chewing. :-) In between chewing he has a look by having the piece on the end of his lip and glancing down towards the piece of paper. When all that chewing makes him thirsty, he goes up to the water and has a right good old slurp (make sure the speakers are turned up) . You would think he might have swallowed the cardboard after that, but no, he still has it in his mouth. You can see him putting it back on his lip to look at and then he continues to chew.
Benji had his 40th birthday on the 6th November 2017. He was born in 1977 at Duisburg zoo, Germany. In 1978 he transferred to Wuppertal zoo, Germany. In 1994 he moved to Dublin zoo, Ireland and in 1996 he moved to Dudley, UK. Dudley zoo has one other male called Jorong in a different enclosure from Benji. There is also the female orangutan Jazz with her 7 year old daughter called Sprout.
Dudley Zoological Gardens is a 40-acre zoo located within the grounds of Dudley Castle in the town of Dudley, in the Black Country region of the West Midlands, England. In the past couple of years more and more has been done to improve the zoo with some great new enclosures.

Gibbon Mother Is Showing Off Her New Born Baby

Can you just make out the little eyes in the gibbons hair? It has also got its tiny feet and an elbow sticking out as well.  As the mom Meo climbs down from the rope and walking across the enclosure, she is showing off her new spring baby to the public and they are ecstatic seeing the baby for the first time. The little one is clinging to mom’s chest and you can see its big beautiful brown eyes with long lashes as she is holding her offspring tight to her chest. Her hungry baby is looking for moms teat to suckle.  Having a couple of failed attempts, it finally finds one and starts suckling. When it gets too cold outside, mom goes back into the inside enclosure where you can see the baby in moms arm. It’s little face looking around. When it moves you can see the fascinating long fingers. The baby was born this year on the 14th of March 2018 to mum Meo and dad Huggy and is yet to be named as the gender is unknown, but if you watch closely you might get an idea! :-).

Their other offspring are six-year-old Penny and three-year-old Indah. The Lar gibbons are also known as the white-handed gibbon or just  Common Gibbon and are an endangered species as threatened in different ways like being hunted for their meat or as a pet trade, but mostly it is habitat loss.

Asante And Lope

Not too much happening with the gorillas. The weather is still wet and windy and they prefer the warm inside. They're looking a bit bored and Lope is staring at Asante. When Asante nibbles on a stick, Lope is his usual annoying self and slaps her arm a few times. He does make way when she wants to lie down, but then he starts to kick her repeatedly with his foot. Asante, as always takes it all in her stride.

Newborn Emperor Tamarin At Twycross Zoo

There were two new mothers with their new born Emperor Tamarin babies. On of them in this clip with what I assume is the mother carrying the baby on her back. I was lucky enough to see it with its eyes open and looking straight into the camera.

Baby Gorilla Shufai On A Roll

Baby Gorilla Shufai On A Roll

The weather is still quite wet and windy and the gorillas from the Twycross zoo prefer to spend their days inside, even though they’ve got the option to go outside at any time they want. Why walk when you can roll? Shufai is having some fun time and rolls through the enclosure, getting himself covered in the wood shavings. He is definitely on a roll and he doesn't want to stop.
