via IFTTT *New series starting today from further afield than my usual visits. The Gorilla troop from the Calgary Zoo in Alberta, Canada.* Gorilla Jasiri is the Silverback of the troop. The females are: Gorilla Zuri, Gorilla Kioja, Gorilla Yewande, Gorilla Dossi and baby daughter Eyare. The new series will include all the gorillas, but mostly you'll see Mother Dossi and Baby Eyare. Baby Eyare, just under a year old, was already showing an unbelievable level of independence. She would play on her own for long stretches of time and even nibble on solid food, showing a level of self-sufficiency that was impressive to watch. Meanwhile, Baby Aarde, from the last series from Chessington Zoo, mostly stayed close to her mother and had only recently started venturing a few meters away. Seeing these two different approaches was a reminder of the unique personalities and individuality of each animal. It was clear that the two babies had their own distinct characters, even from such a young age. Silverback Jasari only came out when it was feeding time, as he preferred to stay in his little den, but there are some baby and dad moments too. Gorilla Yewande was pregnant at the time of my visit and she now had her baby on May 24th 2023. There will be footage of Kioja too. She sadly lost her 6-year-old daughter Kimani to a "rare form of pediatric liver cancer" in 2022. You easily recognise her as she's got a bald head, but still very beautiful. She seems to plug her hair. I've seen older pictures of her and at one point she was nearly totally bald. Series every Thursday at 14hrs UTC +1. Gorilla Jasiri is the Silverback of the troop. Transfers: 31st December 1996 / 23rd June.1998: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo 23rd June 1998 / 26th April.2001: Toronto Zoo 26th April 2001 / now: Calgary Zoo Hand-reared Gorilla Kioja was born on January 24th 2001 at the Wildlife Conservation Society Bronx Transfers: 24th January 2001 / 21st May 2009: Wildlife Conservation Society Bronx 21st May 2009 / now: Calgary Zoo Hand-reared Gorilla Yewande was born May 15th 2008 at Calgary Zoo Her mother is Zuri. Also hand-reared Gorilla Dossi was born on February 4th 2001 at the Wildlife Conservation Society Bronx. 20th April 2022 moved to Calgary Zoo Mother of Eyare, daughter of Zuri Baby Gorilla Eyare was born on April 20th 2022 at Calgary Zoo.
